Off the Tee: Oglebay Park Women’s Golf Club holds annual event

The seventh annual OWGA scramble event was held at Oglebay’s Crispin Center with proceeds from the event were split between the Wheeling YWCA and the Tri-County Help Center in St. Clairsville. Each charity received $1,000 from the OWGA and Mosaic Wealth Consulting in Cannonsburg.

Along with the donation, the club presents more than $2,000 in prize money to the winners of the event.

The low net foursome was Laura Lee Wetzel, Cathis Jones, Sue Mortakis and Debbie Eddy from the OWGA. The low gross foursome was Roberta Cireddu, Tracey Amos, Lori Syzmanek and Kathy Newburn from OWGA and Cadiz Country Club.

The planning work was handled by the committee, which includes Chris Murkoski, Joyce Berdine, Carol Johnson, Cathy Robinson, Mary Letzelter, Betty Johnson, Becky Bauer, Janis Cook and Sherry Sapon.

The OWGA board is comprised of Donita Rush, Sapon, Sandy Terek and Jan Schultz.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The club resumed its schedule last weekend with the Doris L. Kinney Memorial Bestball/Scramble event.

Rodney Eikey and Rodney R. Eikey won by two shots with a score of 66 over Joe Wurtzbacher and Steve Usenick.

Rich Colley and Mark Hartline were third with a 58. Dave Stauver and Dick Moore also posted a 68 for fourth. Gary Mercer and Chris Bommer rounded out the top five.

In the handicap scoring, Dan Willming and Steve Domyan prevailed with a 60. Jim Ennis and Bob Green were second with a 62. John Bryan and Lloyd Carmichael were third. Nick Klamut and Ron Heatherly were fourth with a 64, while Josh Green and Bill Kerns were fifth.

The Jerry’s Bar event was held on June 19. Mike Brickner was the winner with a round of 33, while Jay Davis was the runnerup with a 34. Rodney Eikey and Robbie Evans both finished with a round of 37. Phil Demailo (38), George Melnik (38) and Dan Willming (38) rounded out the top five.

In the handicap scoring, Rich Colley was the winner with a 33, while Larry Goodnight was the runnerup. Tom Mitchell (35), Don Dewitt (35), John Bryan (35) and Bob Green (35) rounded out the top five.

BELLAIRE TOUCHDOWN

CLUB SCRAMBLE

The Annual Bellaire Touchdown Club golf scramble was held last Saturday at Fairway River Links. The winning team consisted of Joey Bodnar, Chase Groves, Jeff Fettu and Andrew Johnson. The team shot 15 under par en route to the victory.

One of the gold sponsors was the Bellaire High School Class of 1965. The team finished 9-1 and outscored their opponents 185-50 and won the OVAC title.

ACE

CARL LYNCH aced the 125-yard, par three, 13th hole at Fairway River Links Golf Course on June 28. His shot was witnessed by Rick Maffe, Mike Clark and Doug Tusky.

BELMONT HILLS

JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

The annual event will be held on Monday, July 22 at Belmont Hills and feature three age groups (17-18, 14-16 and 12-13) for boys and two age groups (15-18 and 12-14) for girls. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in all boys and girls divisions. The entry fee is $30 and checks can be made payable to Barnesville Golf Parents. Lunch will be provided to all competitors and is available for purchase to spectators.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start and the deadline for entry is Monday, July 15.

UPCOMING SCRAMBLES

THE 24TH annual BMAC Golf Classic will be held at Moundsville Country Club on July 18. The event will have a shotgun start at 10 a.m. with a meal following play. The entry fee is $75 per player or $300 per team. There will once again be competitions for the open and corporate cups. The entry fee includes golf, cart, beverages and food. The event will also feature a new addition with the Belmont Savings Bank Chamber Challenge, which will be a putting contest. The winning team will receive a cash prize. Sponsorship opportunities for the event are also available, including cart sponsor ($500), $250 prize or registration sponsors and $100 hole sponsors.

THE NINTH annual Vance Deihl Memorial Scholarship Scramble will be held on Saturday, July 20 at Cadiz Country Club. The entry fee is $65 per player and a shotgun start is planned for 8 a.m. The cost includes golf, cart, refreshments on the course, lunch at the turn, dinner and prizes. Deihl was a teacher, coach and athletic trainer at Martins Ferry High School for 30 years. All proceeds from the event benefit a scholarship for a Martins Ferry senior. THE ST. Clairsville American Legion Post 159 inaugural golf tournament and pig roast will be held on July 21 at Cadiz Country. The cost of the golf tournament is $360 for per team or $90 per player. This includes golf, cart, lunch, beverages and pig roast. There will be skill contests held, too. Sponsorships are also available. If a person desires to attend the pig roast only, he or she can pay $30. More informatio can be attained by contacting the St. Clairsville American Legion.

THE ANNUAL Tom Donahue Memorial Classic Golf Scramble will be held at BecWood Hills on Saturday, July 27. The entry fee is $60 per player or $240 per team. The cost includes cart, golf, food, refreshments, prizes and door prizes. THE SHAMROCK Bowling Golf Scramble will be held on July 27th at Salt Fork State Park. The event will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $60 per player or $240 per team. THE BARNESVILLE Hospital Scramble will be played on Aug. 2 at Belmont Hills Country Club. A shotgun start will be held at 10 a.m. and awards and dinner are slated for 3 p.m. The 17th annual event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the hospital auxiliary.

The cost to enter is $120 per player and it includes golf, lunch, dinner, prizes and refreshments on the course. There are also four levels of sponsorships available.

THE 37TH annual St. Joseph, Tiltonsville, Holy Name Society Scramble will be held Saturday, Aug. 10 at Fairway River Links. The event will begin at 7 a.m. and the entry fee is $50 per player, which includes golf, cart, continuous food and beverages. Hole sponsorships are also available for $25. THE FOURTH annual Bridgeport Wrestling Scramble will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Paradise Hills Golf Course in Yorkville. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and costs $60 per player or $240 a team. THE ANNUAL Ron Ducker Memorial Golf Outing will be held at Cumberland Trail Golf Course in Pataskala on Saturday, Oct. 12. Ducker is a 1978 Bridgeport High School graduate, who passed away in December of 2017 after a bout with cancer. The proceeds from the event will be donated to the Urban and Shelley Meyer Fund for Cancer Research at the Ohio State Medical Center. The entry fee for the tournament, which will begin with a noon shotgun start, is set at $75 per player. After the round, dinner, entertainment and prizes will be awarded.
