POWHATAN — The Magnolia golf team made history Tuesday afternoon.

The Blue Eagles — by virtue of their round of 341 — won the inaugural Mid Ohio Valley League Championship — in any sport — at the Clair-Mar Golf Course.

“I told our players (before the tournament) this is a special day because you have the opportunity to do something that’s never been done,” Magnolia golf coach Dave Tallman said. “Our kids were focused and played about as well as we could play.”

Magnolia finished 23 shots ahead of Frontier, which is in its first season of golf. The Cougars posted a 364 to finish second. Monroe Central was third at 376.

The Blue Eagles placed three players on the all-league team and produced the tournament’s medalist in senior standout Trey Blain, who posted a solid round of 79.

“Trey is very intelligent and his iron play is very good,” Tallman said “He hits his irons as well as anyone I’ve ever seen.”

Blain, who was the runnerup at last week’s OVAC Tournament, overcame a rough front 9 by virtue of posting a 1-over, 36 on the back. He birdied the 18th to get the score in the 70s.

“It’s pretty sweet to win the first one of these,” Blain said. “I didn’t play well on the front because I struggled to get adapted to the conditions. The greens were very hard, so I had to play a club or two short and let it roll up on.”

Blain, who is the defending West Virginia Class A state runnerup, has his sights set on what he eventually hopes is a return trip to Oglebay for the state tournament in a couple of weeks.

“I lost the state tournament on the last hole last year, so I am looking forward to what’s ahead,” Blain said. “My game is looking pretty good, but I still have to continue to work on my putting.”

Alex Parker and Alex Milliken were the next two low scores for Magnolia. They finished with an 83 and 84, respectively. Faith Yoho rounded out their scorers with a 95.

“I like our team because they’re all working hard and continue to work with their teachers,” Tallman said. “Like any sport, if kids peak at the right time, we have a chance to do something, and I think that’s true for these kids.”

Frontier’s Carter Satterfield, Monroe Central’s Austin Sloan and Bridgeport’s Cooper Dulesky all signed for an 87 to tie for fourth place. Shadyside’s Nico Bumba (88) and Lucas Reed (89) both earned all-league accolades as well.

The event also featured girls players from three schools. Shadyside’s Grace Green was the low score among the females with an 88. River’s Autumn Ensinger was second with a 95. Both were also named all-league.
