Beallsville eliminated by Shenandoah

SARAHSVILLE — Shenandoah High followed up last week’s memorable OVAC Class 2A championship by winning the OHSAA Division IV sectional crown on Saturday by trouncing Beallsville. The Lady Zeps KO’d the Lady Blue Devils in 48 minutes, prevailing by 25-11, 25-7 and 25-10 scores.

Coach Megan Grywalski’s squad — which collected its 13th straight win to improve to 17-7 — moves on to the district where Tuscarawas Central Catholic awaits. The third-seeded Lady Zeps and fifth-seeded Lady Saints — who outlasted fourth-seeded Monroe Central in a five-set sectional final on Saturday (26-24, 25-12, 23-25, 17-25, 15-11) — will play Wednesday at 6 p.m. at a site to be announced by the Eastern District Board.

With her team on a roll, Grywalski is looking forward to the challenge against always-tough TCC.

“I think winning the OVAC against Shadyside and all the tough teams we played this year will have us prepared for it,” she said.

Shenandoah was slightly off its game at the outset of the noon start while Beallsville was ready to go, resulting in an early 8-8 standoff.

After that, however, the Lady Zeps awoke from their slumber and ripped off seven straight points en route to an opening 25-11 win.

From there, it was just a matter of time as Shenandoah’s power game at the net and relatively mistake-free play all over the court resulted in two more quick sets and the sectional crown.

“We’re such a mental team when it comes to routine,” Grywalski said. “It was different having a game early like this and got off our normal schedule, but after a slow start, we settled down.

“I thought we played especially well in the second game,” she continued. “We did a nice job communicating. Most of our girls play front row and back row, so they understand what they need to do.”

For Beallsville, it was a case of not being able to sustain its solid start against a physically-superior team.

“We scrimmaged them early and we played with them,” said Beallsville coach Jeff Fluharty, “and we started out well today, but our problem all season is that we’re too inconsistent.

“When one thing goes wrong, we just can’t seem to bring it back,” he added, while also crediting the Lady Zeps for their strong performance

“They’re a really good team,” the Beallsville boss acknowledged. “The hit strong and they cover the floor really well.”

Senior Raegan Flood continued to dominate at the net, posting 19 kills while senior Whitney Dixon contributed nine stops. Senior Trysten Smith set things up nicely with 28 assists while the defensive leaders were Flood with 12 kills and senior Laura Doak with nine.

Freshman Tara Pakes served up 16 points (four aces) while Smith had 10 (four aces), Dixon had 10 (two aces) and Flood had seven (two aces).

Ashley Howell, Makenna Phillips and Cheyenne Riley each had two kills for Beallsville while Ashlie Louden notched five assists.

Beallsville finished the season with a solid 14-9 overall record.

“We set preseason goals and one of them was to get double-digit wins,” said Fluharty, “so overall, we had a pretty good year.

“We’ll miss our three seniors (Howell, Louden and Jaydn Gabel), but we’ve got a pretty good junior class to lead us next year.”

The other D-IV District semifinal on Wednesday pits No. 1 seed Shadyside against No. 2 seed Fort Frye. Shadyside swept No. 10 seed Bishop Rosecrans (25-16, 25-21, 26-24) to win its sectional championship while Fort Frye did likewise against No. 11 seed Malvern (25-16, 25-8, 25-18).

The D-IV District Championship will take place Saturday at 4 p.m.
