Several teams trying to keep playoff hopes alive

With just three weeks left in the high school football regular season — in Ohio — there are just three local teams in the playoff hunt, those being Bellaire, Shadyside and St. Clairsville. The Red Devils stopped a two-game losing skid last Saturday with a gut-check, 21-6, victory at Nelson Field against Buckeye 8 rival Big Reds. Shadyside hosts Bellaire Friday at Fleming Field in a game previewed elsewhere on this page.

St. Clairsville (5-2) will look to make it two wins in a row Friday when it hosts I-70 rival Union Local (0-7) on Senior Night at Red Devil Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Red Devils enter the contest ranked fifth in Division IV, Region 15. They are second behind Oak Glen in the OVAC Class 4A stasndings and close the campaign with games at Fairfield Union (0-6) and Wheeling Central (4-2).

A stout defensive effort against the Big Reds paved the way for success. Will Balgo picked off two passes, recorded nine tackles and a quarterback hurry. Derek Witsberger led the team with a dozen stops, broke up a pass and picked one off. Noah Trubiano also had an INT to go along with four tackles.

Quarterback Tyler Tonkovich was effective with 167 yards of total offense and two TDs — one passing and one rushing.

The Jets have struggled from the outset. They have been outscored 264-39 this season.

There are six other contests on tap Friday, with all having 7 o’clock kickoffs.

Monroe (3-4) at Barnesville (3-4)

AT BARNESVILLE, the Seminoles visit Shamrock Stadium for a battle of squads that started the season on winning streaks.

Barnesville was 3-0 before injuries beset the Green. The Shamrocks are ranked 17th in Division V, Region 17 and have games left at Toronto and Union Local.

Monroe Central was 2-0 until losing three of its last four. A victory over Magnolia in week 6 stopped the bleeding. The Seminoles are 15th in Division VII, Region 27 and finish with home contests against Frontier and Shadyside.

Bridgeport (1-6) at River (3-4)

AT HANNIBAL, the Bulldogs make the short trip down Ohio 7 to Martin Flannery Field fresh off their first triumph of the season, a 16-13 nod over homestanding Trinity in Morgantown.

Meanwhile, the Pilots are coming off back-to-back losses to Shadyside (40-6) and River View (34-14) after an impressive win at Barnesville (42-22).

River enters ranked 11th in Division VII, Region 27 and has games at home against Caldwell and at Frontier to finish the season.

Oak Glen (7-0) at Harrison (3-4)

AT CADIZ, the red-hot Huskies entertain the equally red-hot Golden Bears at Wagner Field.

After a 1-4 start, Harrison Central has posted consecutive road wins against St. Clairsville and Steubenville Catholic to move into the 16th spot in Division V, Region 17.

Oak Glen is in unchartered waters as it has never been unblemished this far into the season. It is ranked fifth in the latest W.Va. Class AA poll and tops the OVAC Class 4A standings.

The Huskies close the season by hosting rival Indian Creek and visiting Buckeye Local.

East Liverpool (3-4) at Buckeye (1-6)

AT YORKVILLE, the Panthers are coming off a heartbreaking setback to Beaver Local, 21-20, as the Potters visit World War II Memorial Stadium.

Buckeye Local led 20-7 at the half before allowing two touchdowns by the Beavers.

The Panthers had a pair of chances in the waning moments, but couldn’t prevail.

East Liverpool is ranked 15th in Division IV, Region 13.

Beallsville (2-5) at Conotton Valley (2-5)

AT BOWERSTON, the Blue Devils will be seeking their third win of the season when they trek to Rockets Stadium.

Beallsville is ranked 16th in Division VII, Region 27.
