Area gridders recognized as all-Eastern District

CAMBRIDGE — Several area football players have been recognized on the All-Eastern District Football Team, which is chosen by a panel of media members throughout the Eastern District.

Along with being recognized, four area players earned special accolades as a district player of the year.

Shadyside, which played in last night’s regional semifinal round against Newark Catholic, produced the top offensive honoree in Division VII.

Sophomore standout Wyatt Reiman was named the Offensive Player of the Year after a regular season in which he was brilliant in his first season as the Tigers’ primary ball carrier.

Reiman posted 1,151 yards and 21 touchdowns rushing and was also a major threat in the passing game with 22 receptions for 530 yards and 6 more touchdowns. He’s continued his offensive onslaught during the tournament, too.

On the defensive side of the ball in the smallest division, River’s Carter Dennis repeated as the top honoree.

Dennis, just a junior, battled an injury in the middle portion of the season, which cost him the parts of two games. Still, however, he managed to post 118 tackles, including 15 for loss and 9 sacks. He was also a standout on the offensive side of the ball with 777 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns.

Martins Ferry, which finished 6-4 on the season, had one of the co-defensive players of the year in Division V.

Junior standout Evan Carpenter caused all kinds of problems from a variety of spots for opposing defenses.

Carpenter finished the season with 75 tackles, including 18 for loss. He also posted eight sacks. Along with that, he affected the game on special teams. He blocked three kicks and a punt.

In Division VI, Buckeye Trail’s Jack Parry was the top defensive honoree.

Parry was a force at linebacker, recording 119 tackles, three sacks. He also picked off three passes, forced and recovered a fumble and scored a defensive touchdown. He was also a standout on the offensive side of the ball for the Warriors at fullback.

Indian Creek’s Tyler Smarella was the defensive player of the year in Division VI and his head coach, Andrew Connor, was named co-coach of the year after guiding the Redskins to a 9-1 record, OVAC title and the school’s first playoff win.

Steubenville running back Tayveon Crawford was named co-Offensive Player of the Year in Division III.
