Barnesville cruises to victory at Union Local to retain ‘Milk Bucket’

MORRISTOWN — Let the milk flow in Barnesville.

The Shamrocks didn’t waste any time in jumping all over western Belmont County rival Union Local Friday night. They scored 17 points in the first six minutes and never looked back in posting a 31-13 victory at chill-filled Jets Stadium.

With the win, Barnesville (5-5) evened its record and went 2-0 in trophy games as it claimed the Milk Bucket for the second consecutive year, and fourth in the last five. The Green, which also defeated Meadowbrook for the Dowler Memorial Trophy in week 3, now hold a 7-4 advantage in the series, which began presenting a trophy in 2009.

“I’m really proud of our kids. We faced a lot of adversity this year, but I’d be lying if I said we weren’t disappointed with the final record, obviously with the great start we had,” Barnesville head coach Blake Allen said in reference to his team’s 3-0 beginning. “We battled all season. I don’t think we ever got down on ourselves and that’s a tribute to the senior leadership we had. We were able to stick together and fight through the adversity.”

Trey Warner recovered a fumble deep in Union Local territory on the second play of the game. A snap later, fullback Caden Lake rambled in from 10 yards out. Gavin Carpenter’s PAT made it 7-0 with 53 seconds elapsed.

On their third possession from the their 37, the Jets were in punt formation when the snap sailed over Cody Morrison’s head. He picked it up around the 15 while under pressure, and kicked it out of the back of the end zone for a safety and a 9-0 Barnesville lead.

The Shamrocks took the ensuing free kick and drove 41 yards on half-a-dozen plays. Quarterback Alex Meade went in from a yard out and then passed to Cameron Woods for the two points and a 17-0 bulge with 6:12 showing.

“We came out ready to play. We could’ve pointed fingers and blamed each other, but I thought we came out ready to play,” Allen noted. “We showed some character there to start the game. Things got a little crazy there in the second half, but that quick start carried us through.”

The same can’t be said for the Jets who lost for the 15th straight time. The 0-10 season was the program’s first since 2011.

“This game was like a storyline to our season when we spotted them 17 points,” Union Local head coach Bernie Thompson said. “That’s been our storyline. But, we settled in the kids battled.

“A team represents their coach. We might not be the biggest, the strongest, the most talented, but I can say they didn’t quit all year,” Thompson continued. “I can honestly say they’ve got stronger and they’ve gotten better as the year has gone on. So it’s a testament to those guys and it’s a testament to our coaching staff.

“The future is extremely bright. The kids have to realize though that potential means nothing. Potential means you haven’t accomplished anything yet. What we’re going to do is come back and we’re going to work extremely hard in the off-season,” he added. “I’m excited.”

A bright spot in the Jets dismal campaign was the play of freshman Carter Blake. He came on midway through the season when injuries decimated the quarterback position. He completed 15 of 31 passes for 225 yards, two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

“He throws a great ball,” Thompson said of Blake. “He just needs to learn what we are trying to do.”

Barnesville amassed 295 yards of offense, with 231 and three touchdowns of that coming on the ground behind Lake (20-116-2tds) and Meade (16-78-td). Meade was 7-for-14 for 64 yards and a score. He also threw a pick. Owen Oliver caught the TD pass from 9 yards out.

“I’m happy we were able to send our seniors out with a win. They’ve given us a lot of the last four years,” Allen praised. “It was an up-and-down season, but they hung in there and kept us together when things got tough. They’ve done a lot for us. I’m proud of them.”

Union Local could only muster 18 yards rushing on 12 attempts. Caleb McWhorter caught seven passes for 137 yards which included a 93-yard connection in which he weaved his way through defenders that made it 31-13. Hunter McCort also had a 7-yard scoring reception and Parker Skedel booted a PAT.
