Strong start helps send Indian Creek girls past Harrison Central

CADIZ — When a team talks about wanting to play pressure defense, normally it’s of the full-court variety.

Indian Creek demonstrated Wednesday evening at the gorgeous Harrison Central High School that that doesn’t always have to be the case.

The Redskins (1-0) were very active with a half-court trap, some zone and a little bit of man and forced the Huskies into upwards of 35 turnovers en route to a convincing 61-23 victory.

“We knew they’re young at the guard spot, so we really wanted to pressure them as much as we could,” Creek head coach Steve Eft said. “We don’t have the depth that we did last year, so we’re having to find different ways to pressure the ball. I thought our energy was really good and we got our hands on a lot of passes.”

Creek’s defense not only forced turnovers, but it made life on the Huskies when they did possess the ball extremely tough. Harrison Central had just nine field goals in the game and nary an individual in double figures.

“It doesn’t matter what happens when you have more turnovers than points and probably shots, too,” Harrison Central head coach Nick Yourkovich said. “You do that and you’re probably not even going to be competitive. They did a lot of things that we didn’t want, but we knew it was coming. We’ve worked all offseason and pre-season on our ball handling, but we just didn’t do any of it tonight. We walked out on the floor scared and it showed.”

Indian Creek had raced out to a 9-0 lead before the Huskies recorded their first basket. All told, the Redskins owned a 14-3 upperhand after one.

Despite its own offensive struggles, the Redskins, who were making their season debut, still owned a 29-8 lead at halftime and it eventually swelled to 36-8 to open the third.

“We got good looks, but we missed a lot of shots,” Eft said. “Early, I thought we forced a couple, but we did a good job of working for a better shot as the game went along. Overall, we’re happy with the victory.”

The Redskins were led in the scoring column by talented point guard Kylie Kiger. Her shot wasn’t falling early, but she came alive in the second half when she scored 11 of her game-high 15. Taylor Jones was a force on the interior with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

Harrison Central was led by McKayla Dunkle’s seven.

The Huskies will aim for their first win Monday at Edison, while Indian Creek returns to the floor Sunday at a holiday event at Walsh University in Canton against Youngstown Boardman.
