Hendershot, Amos guide Shadyside past Union Local

MORRISTOWN — Ed Andes is never one for a lengthy postgame presser.

He’s not rude. The veteran Shadyside boys’ hoops coach just prefers to keep his answers simple.

So, when asked about his team’s performance following Friday night’s 59-49 victory against Union Local inside “The Hangar,” the affable bench boss was true to his traditional demeanor.

“We won,” he stated.

Short, yet accurate.

His Tigers didn’t do anything flashy, either, in rebounding from a loss at Shenandoah on Tuesday to improve to 2-1. They were fundamentally sound at both ends of the court in handing the Jets their third straight loss.

“Coming in here, it’s a tough place to play,” Andes remarked inside an empty Tigers locker room. “You know (Union Local) is gonna play hard. Coming off that tough road loss Tuesday, it was nice to see our kids bounce back.”

Kelly Hendershot poured in 18 points and Bryce Amos added 16 as everyone up and down the Shadyside lineup did their job during the game, which the Tigers led by as many as 14 in the fourth before the starters were pulled with about 2 minutes remaining.

The game was tied at 17-17 after one, thanks to a Hunter McCort half-court heave to end the period. From there, though, the Tigers outscored the Jets 33-17 during the next 18 minutes.

“We’re just struggling to put the ball in the basket right now,” UL head coach Zach Delman said of his team, which hasn’t won since opening night against Bellaire.

“I don’t think we’re far off from being a good team. They’re playing extremely hard and they’re doing everything I’m asking them to do.

“Defensively, sometimes were just a step late from getting to the ball. Offensively, we’re just not as crisp as we need to be. Sometimes, our passes into our cutters are just a hair late, which helps the defense.”

Defense was something Andes was pleased with, despite the fact Luke Merritt finished with a game-high 20 for the Jets.

“It got better,” he noted. “(Merritt) was shooting extremely well. We just stepped it up, which was good to see.”

Shadyside posted sizable scoring runs at the start of the final three quarters.

A 7-0 spurt to open the second, keyed by four from Hendershot, helped the Tigers go up 28-21. A jumper by Carter Loase and layup by Cade Latham closed UL’s gap to three at halftime.

Korey Beckett made back-to-back baskets early in the third, part of a 7-3 run that put Shadyside up seven again. He finished with 11.

The backbreaking surge came to start the fourth. There, Amos and Hendershot, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in the Tigers’ opener, combined for six points in an 8-0 run that left the Tigers up 48-32.

“Having them play well makes it nice,” Andes said. “If we can make some outside shots with Kelly and then be able to throw it in to Bryce, that’s a nice 1-2 punch.”

Shadyside, which visits Bridgeport tonight, also received nine boards and five assists from Mason VanNest.

“The guys came back with a lot of energy in the second half,” Andes said. “We had different kids step up, which is great.”

The Jets return to action Tuesday at Harrison Central.
