Bonus bombs propel Shadyside

SHADYSIDE — When a team has its shooting eye zeroed in there isn’t much a coach can do but watch. That’s what Bridgeport’s Greg Harkness did Thursday night. However, it was Shadyside that he was watching put on the clinic from behind the bonus arc.

The homestanding Tigers (14-5) knocked down a season-high 17 three-point goals en route to a repeat, 73-46, decision over the game Bulldogs inside the Tigers Den.

Senior Brooke Selmon led the three-point barrage with seven, including three in the first quarter when Shadyside bolted to a 24-11 lead.

“She’s very capable of shooting like that any night,” Gentile said of Selmon. “We see that type of stuff every day in practice. The basket probably looked like a garbage can to her tonight.”

Selmon added two more bonus bombs, including one just ahead of the halftime buzzer, and sophomore Baylee Wach drilled a pair as the lead grew to 40-23 at the half. Both finished with 21 points as Wach had five treys. All told, six different Tigers

A 21-5 advantage in the third quarter allowed the hosts to pull away.

“That game had nothing … zero … to do with our effort. We played hard,” Harkness said. “It had more to do with Shadyside executing and their shot-making abilities. We tried to play a little bit of man (defense) and maybe sag off of some people, but we didn’t rebound early and we sort of had to get out of that because we weren’t rebounding.

“Our effort was there. I feel like we are making strides to get better, but you’ve got to give Shadyside credit,” Harkness noted. “They made shots. They executed. They have two studs and you have to worry about them. Their other girls stepped up tonight and that’s a recipe to get a win.”

Tory Hendershot added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Paige Gorby pulled down a game-leading nine boards.

Bridgeport’s Jaren Tucker, coming off a career-best 36-point effort against Buckeye Local a night earlier, fired in 27 points. However, 14 of them came in the final panel when the outcome was already decided. She had four bonus goals. Meleah Tiber added 11 points and Jessa Stockwell had seven rebounds.

“I think we all played well,” Gentile said.

Shadyside is back in action Monday night at Bellaire. Bridgeport (2-15) entertains Barnesville the same night.
