Union Local girls improve to 19-0

MORRISTOWN — Many basketball observers would have called Monday night’s John Marshall at Union Local a trap game for the Jets after their huge win over Indian Creek Saturday in the “meetin’ of the unbeatens” for the Buckeye 8 title. However, someone forgot to tell the hosts.

After a sluggish start due to Senior Night festivities, which turned into Grandparents Night due to the Jets not having a senior on their roster, Union Local (19-0) turned on the Jets and flew past visiting John Marshall (7-10) inside “The Hangar” by a 79-49 margin.

“I wasn’t worried as much about the trap game than I was the pre-game festivities, but these girls don’t get rattled,” Union Local head coach Rob Barr said. “It wasn’t a regular night for us because the girls weren’t out there shooting an hour before the game like they always do because we had a freshman boys game.

“I guess they didn’t need to shoot around.”

Union Local tickled the twine to the tune of 61 percent (30-49) for the game, and 70 percent (19-27) in the first half.

“We had some defense lapses in the first half, but we played really well offensively in the first half,” Barr noted. “We scored 46 points against a pretty decent team.”

Both teams had their shooting eyes dialed in from long distance in the first 16 minutes as the Monarchs connected on eight three-point goals to hang around. However, the Jets hit their first seven treys before missing as they led 46-30 at the break.

“I knew they made seven and didn’t miss many. That sounds about right,” John Marshall head coach Brock Melko said when informed of the Jets three-point shooting totals for the first half. “They shot well. At every level of basketball you can do whatever you want, but the name of the game is putting the ball in the basket. If they shoot like that, they are going to be hard to beat, not just by us but by anybody.

“I told the girls after the game, even though UL got a lead in the first half, we got the ball where we wanted it. We executed offensively and made a couple of shots, but in the second half we got the same looks, we just couldn’t knock them down,” Melko added. “They (UL) kept knocking down their shots. That’s the game of basketball — making shots and they did a better job of that than we did.

“I tell the girls all the time that you can’t control makes and misses,” Melko continued. “I know they’re trying to make them, so I can live with getting outshot every now and then.”

Freshmen Reagan Vinskovich (21) and Torre Kildow (19) led the winners, while Hannah Merritt added 15. Kildown had five bonus bombs and Merritt a trio. Casey Kildow and Keira Gregor had nine each. Vinskovich also captured game honors with 11 rebounds as the hosts held a commanding, 37-26, advantage off the glass.

Catherine Hunnel and Abby Blake had 13 points each for John Marshall. Hunnel, who had four treys, also collected six rebounds, as did Madge Lucey.

The Monarchs charted 21 turnovers, six more than the Jets.

UL will look for its 20th straight win Thursday when it hosts Linsly.
