District 12 Hall of Fame adding four players

Four more talented performers who rank among their school’s best have been added to the District 12 Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Tabbed as the Class of 2020 in District 12 as athletes are Stacey Pfeifer of Bishop Rosecrans High (Class of 1983) and Kacie Vavrek of Bellaire (Class of 2002) on the girls’ side while the boys’ honorees are Kevin Martin of Zanesville (Class of 2001) and Ricky Ray of Martins Ferry (Class of 1991).

Those four will be honored at the Pepsi District 12 All-Star Basketball Classic on Friday, April 17 at Buckeye Trail High School in Old Washington (the game was originally to be played on April 3, but has been tentatively moved back due to schools being called off due to the coronavirus pandemic) along with the two coaches announced last week – Greg Woodard (Crooksville/John Glenn) and Kim Clifford (Cadiz/St. Clairsville).

That brings the total of honorees dating back to 63, including 14 coaches, 24 female athletes, 24 male athletes and one contributor.

Here’s a look at the bios of the four players in the Class of 2020:

Stacey Pfeifer (Bishop Rosecrans High School, Class of 1983).She was the “go-to” player on the Lady Bishops’ back-to-back OHSAA Class A State Championship squads in 1982 and 83 and finished her career with 1,460 career points.

As a junior, the 5-6 guard led Rosecrans to the ’82 state title – beating Anna (51-46, with Pfeifer scoring 26 points) and New Washington Buckeye Central (71-51, Pfeifer had 27) to finish the year 24-2, with Pfeifer named the MVP of the state tournament. She was named special mention all-Ohio Class A along with first team all-Eastern District and all-District 12.

As a senior, she elevated to a 26.3 scoring average and guided Rosecrans to another crown – beating Delphos St. John’s (66-52, Pfeifer had 29) and Mansfield St. Peter’s (70-36, Pfeifer had 23) to post a spotless 26-0 record, with Pfeifer again named the MVP. This time, she was not only first team all-Ohio, but was selected the state’s Class A Player of the Year, and she again earned first team all-Eastern District and all-District 12 honors, tabbed Player of the Year on both.

Pfeifer not only played in the District 12 All-Star Basketball Classic, she participated in the prestigious McDonald’s All-Star Basketball Classic. She also received Academic All-America honors from the National High School Athletic Coaches Association.

Kevin Martin (Zanesville High School, Class of 2001). Whether in high school, college or the NBA, there’s no doubt “K-Mart” could put the ball in the hoop.

Martin was a bit of a late bloomer in high school after missing his sophomore season with a broken arm, but he made a big splash as a senior when he averaged 22.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game and finished with a two-year total of 717 points. As a senior, he received second team all-Ohio Division I honors, was one of the four finalists for the prestigious Ohio Mr. Basketball award and received All-America recognition.

He was also first team all-East District and all-District 12, named Division I Player of the Year on both teams after leading the Blue Devils to a 19-4 record and a berth in the OHSAA “Sweet Sixteen.” Martin played in the OHSBCA North-South All-Star Game and the Ohio-Kentucky All-Star Game. He was inducted into the Zanesville Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.

He averaged 23.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game during his three years in college and he was a three-time all-Southern Conference selection (2003-2004), leading the league in scoring twice. He averaged 22.1 points as a freshman (11th in the NCAA), 22.8 as a sophomore (10th in the NCAA) and 24.9 as a junior (2nd in the NCAA).

Named to the NABC and USBWA All-District team as a senior (the only non-ACC player selected that year), Martin ended his college career third all-time at WCU in 3-pointers (174) and FTs (534) and fourth in steals (134). He was inducted into the Western Carolina University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.

Martin left WCU after junior year and was drafted by the Sacramento Kings with the 26th pick in the 2004 NBA Draft.

He played for the Kings (2004-2010); Houston Rockets (2010-2012); Oklahoma City Thunder (2012-13); Minnesota Timberwolves (2013-16) and San Antonio Spurs (2016) during his career, finishing with 12,396 points (17.4 ppg), 2,278 rebounds (3.2 rbpg), 1,352 assists (1.9 apg), shooting 43.7 percent on field goals; 38.7 percent on three-pointers and 87 percent on free throws in 714 games. He retired from the NBA in 2016.

Ricky Ray (Martins Ferry High School, Class of 1991).He was one of the rare four-year varsity letterman in basketball in that era, becoming a major force as both a junior and senior. Ray finished his career with an impressive 1,203 points, which ranks No. 3 on the Purple Riders’ all-time boys’ scoring list behind OVAC Hall of Famers Ron ‘Cy’ Godfrey (Class of 1956) and Alex Groza (Class of 1943) who tallied 1,338 and 1,284 points, respectively.

After scoring 88 points as a freshman, he boosted that total to 172 as a sophomore and then enjoyed two stellar campaigns with 442 as a junior and 552 as a senior, the latter resulting in an impressive 29.2 per game average.

As a senior, Ray was selected to the third team all-Ohio Division II team by The Associated Press. He also received first team all-Eastern District Division II; all-OVAC Class AAA; all-District 12 Division II and all-Valley “Big School” accolades as both a junior and senior.

He continued to excel in hoops at the next level as a four-year letterman at Wheeling Jesuit University. Ray tallied 1,001 points mark in college, earning third team all-WVIAC honors as a sophomore. He graduated from WJU in 1996 and earned his master’s degree in 2001.
