WLU athletes honored for academics

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The West Liberty University athletic department once again led the way for all Mountain East Conference public universities on Thursday when the league released the MEC All-Academic Team and MEC Commissioner’s Honor Roll for winter and spring sports.

The Hilltoppers had 61 student-athletes earn MEC All-Academic Team status by posting GPAs of 3.70 or higher with 59 more earning citations for the MEC Commissioner’s Honor Roll with GPAs ranging from 3.25 through 3.69.

Due to the disruption to the winter and spring sports and academic calendar caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s MEC academic honors were based on the 2019-20 fall semester grading period.

West Liberty’s combined total of 120 academic honorees easily outdistanced the MEC’s other public universities and was second overall only to West Virginia Wesleyan’s 139.

Newcomer Davis & Elkins was the only other school to crack the century mark at 107 with Notre Dame (96) and Charleston (92) rounding out the top five. Fairmont State was second among the public universities with 90 academic qualifiers.

This marks the fifth year for the MEC’s academic honors program, instituted by the league to honor its many student-athletes who maintain a high level of academic success.

The winter and spring sports awards include the MEC sports of acrobatics & tumbling, baseball, softball, wrestling, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s swimming and women’s lacrosse.
