Barnesville spikers sweep Buckeye Local

BARNESVILLE’S MARLY Keiser prepares to serve during the Shamrocks match at Buckeye Local Wednesday night. The visitors won in a sweep.

CONNORVILLE — Barnesville volleyball coach Kimberly Jarrett always speaks to her team about controlling the match.

The Shamrocks seemed to do that pretty well on Wednesday night as they swept host Buckeye Local 25-19, 25-18 and 25-14.

Barnesville led the entire match, aside from a 2-0 Buckeye Local lead to start the first set and a 1-0 edge to begin the third.

“I am proud of them,” Jarrett said. “I tell our girls all the time that we have to control the match and control the set. I feel like we do that most of the time but I feel like we can improve on that.

“I expect more out of them and they know that. We are still working hard because I don’t like to see the gap get minimized. I like to control and finish the set but I like what I see.”

It’s a 3-0 start to the season for the Shamrocks but the Panthers kept the first set close — keeping the score within 15-12 midway through but eventually Keirston Adams began serving and reeled off four straight points to push Barnesville’s advantage to 22-13 and it never looked back.

Freshman Ava Mcfarland got Barnesville off to a hot start in the second set with a 7-0 run as the Shamrocks led from start to finish.

After falling back 1-0 in the third, Barnesville reeled off an 8-0 run behind the serving of Marly Keiser and later added a four-point spurt from Grace Detling to extend the lead to 17-6 en route to the triumph.

“It’s a total team effort,” Jarrett said.

“It’s not an individual effort, it takes all 11 that I dress.

“I think the coverage of our defense is improving. When a hitter goes up for a block, we are getting those touches more now. I also think we are working as a team more and getting big swings. Our girls are just reading the court really well.”

Isabella Hepburn paced Buckeye Local with 10 points and six blocks, Kassidy George tallied 21 digs, Abby Kinyo recorded 16 assists and Landyn Walker and Abbey Berze each added four kills.

“We still have some young players and we’re still trying to find our feet,” Buckeye Local coach Lisa Dibias said. “I think that our younger players who are starting with us now are going to be better in the coming years because they are seeing what needs to be done and seeing what needs to be put in and they are learning from the older players.”
