Harrison and Monroe face tough road tests

HARRISON CENTRAL quarterback Kobe Mitchell has been the offensive catalyst for the Huskies all season. Harrison will take on South Range Saturday night.

CADIZ — After having its opening-round Division V, Region 17 playoff game against Rootstown canceled due to COVID-19, Harrison Central (3-3) will look to snap a two-game losing skid Saturday night when it travels to Canfield to meet a tough South Range (6-0) squad in the second round.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Mahoning County.

The Huskies were sailing along at 3-1 after doubling up Union Local, 40-20, but have dropped back-to-back contests to Martins Ferry (36-34) and St. Clairsville (35-20), with both setbacks coming at home.

Harrison Central is powered offensively by do-everything quarterback Kobe Mitchell. The senior signal-caller has completed 75 of his 135 attempts (55.6 percent) for 1,211 yards. He has thrown 11 touchdowns and only three interceptions. Mitchell also has five rushing touchdowns and 348 yards on 66 totes.

When Mitchell looks to throw he usually finds Trevor Carman. The junior has caught 33 passes for 560 yards and five touchdowns. Classmate Jonathan Vermillion is also an option Mitchell looks for quite frequently.

James Brooks is the Huskies leading rusher with 355 yards and six TDs on 34 trips. However, 200 of those came in the season opener.

South Range is third in the latest Associated Press poll. The Raiders had a bye last week and are averaging 41.8 points per game. They have defeated three teams with five victories each.

Monroe Central (4-3) at Glouster Trimble (6-0)

The Seminoles are coming off a 46-6 shellacking of Strasburg on Saturday in Division VII, Region 27 action. Their reward is a meeting with the top-seeded Tomcats, who are also ranked No. 3 in the latest Associated Press poll.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Monroe Central was led by the running of senior Alex Kilburn; the all-around play of classmate Malachi Rose-Burton; and the physical offensive and defensive lines.

Kilburn racked up 154 yards and scored four touchdowns on just 14 touches. Rose-Burton added a pair of rushing TDs and 97 yards on eight carries, while also throwing for 119 and a TD to Michael Bunting who had four snags for 66 stripes.

The Seminoles dominated the lines of scrimmage as senior Garet Cramer led the way.

Glouster Trimble, which received a bye last week, is averaging 37 points per outing and has shut out its last four opponents. The Tomcats have allowed just 35 points, with 28 of those coming in their opener to Nelsonville-York (34-28).

Buckeye Trail (2-3) at Africentric (3-1)

The Warriors haven’t played since falling at East Canton 28-22 on Sept. 25. Their game with Newcomerstown was canceled, as was their Division VI, Region 23 playoff game with Mt. Gilead last week due to COVID-19.

The Nubians defeated KIPP Columbus 36-14 last week. They had byes in the first three weeks of the regular season.

Regular Season

Bridgeport (2-5) at Racine Southern (2-5)

The Bulldogs will make the 3-hour-plus trek to Meigs County to meet the Tornadoes after suffering a 31-8 loss at Steubenville Catholic on Saturday.

The setback was the third straight for Bridgeport since it defeated Beallsville 46-13 on Sept. 18.

Racine Southern ran for 631 yards and 8 touchdowns last week in rallying from a 19-18 deficit at halftime to claim a 57-25 win at Beallsville.
