Monroe, Buckeye, UL all set to open playoffs Saturday

Week 7 of the high school football season is one for the books in the Buckeye State. Not only do the state playoffs begin Friday night, there are a few teams still playing regular-season contests.

All told there are half-a-dozen games this weekend, with four being in the postseason. One contest is scheduled for Friday, while a quartet of postseason matchups and one regular season battle are on tap for Saturday.

Saturday

Strasburg (2-3) at Monroe Central (3-3)

The Tigers and Seminoles meet at Monroe Park in a Division VII, Region 27 playoff tilt.

Monroe Central, seeded 16th, is coming off a 41-21 shellacking of visiting Magnolia last week. The win stopped a three-game losing streak after the Seminoles started 2-0 with victories over Union Local (26-22) and Bridgeport (41-8).

The Seminoles have been paced by the running of senior fullback Alex Kilburn and classmate quarterback Malachi Rose-Burton. Auston Hogue, Garret Cramer and Michael Bunning have also be key performers.

Strasburg, the 17th seed, hasn’t played since week 5 when it defeated Newcomerstown(28-10).

Buckeye Local (1-5) at Ravenna Southeast (3-3)

The Panthers are seeded 22nd and will face the fourth-seeded Pirates in Portage County in Division IV, Region 17 at 130 pm.

After starting the campaign 0-4, Buckeye Local has shown vast improvement in defeating Monroe Central (32-14) and dropping a heart-breaker to Shenandoah (16-8) in overtime last week.

Tailback Trey Hoover has made the switch from quarterback and that has sparked the turnaround. Hayden Taylor has taken over as the field general and his top target is Brian Palmer Jr.

Ravenna Southeast started the season 3-0 but has lost its last three outings while only scoring 7 points in each contest. It dropped a 27-7 nod to undefeated Garfield last week.

Union Local (1-5) at Vinton County (3-3)

The 21st-seeded Jets make the trek to McArthur to face the No. 12 Vikings in Division IV, Region 15.

Union Local hasn’t tasted victory since week 2 when it topped Buckeye Local (19-6). However, it lost a toughie last week at Barnesville (24-21) when a tipped pass was intercepted in the end zone late in the fourth quarter.

Tailback Jaksan Price has been the Jets leading rusher while Carter Blake as performed well at quarterback. His main targets are Carter Loase, Caleb McWhorter, Dakota Hess and Tre Rex.

Vinton County lost to Wellston (33-12) in its last outing.

Mt. Gilead (0-4) at Buckeye Trail (2-3)

The Warriors, seeded No. 9, host the 24th-seeded Indians, at the Baker Activity Center in Division VI, Region 23 action.

Buckeye Trail lost to East Canton on Sept. 25 but had its game with Newcomerstown canceled last week. Meanwhile, Mt. Gilead had its first two games canceled and has only scored 41 points, losing to Cardington-Lincoln (28-6) last week.

All playoff games have 7 p.m. kickoffs.
