MORRISTOWN — Momentum plays a key role in all of sports, but it seems to be especially powerful in volleyball.

Once Union Local seized the momentum Wednesday evening, the Jets didn’t let go.

Finding itself down 20-14 in the first set, Union Local reeled off 11 of the set’s next 13 to take the first set and set the tone for what turned out to be a 25-22, 25-11 and 26-24 sweep of Fort Frye in the Division III Eastern District semifinal held at Union Local High School.

“Fort Frye came to play and I knew they weren’t going to give up,” a relieved UL head coach Kaye Sechrest said. “I told the girls they had to play every point like it was the end all and be all.”

The message evidently came across loud and clear.

In the first set, the Jets just simply began to chip away at the Cadets (20-5) lead and actually one of the final two points Fort Frye scored came via a service error.

“In that first set, the girls really focused on playing one point at a time and not to worry about what has happened or what will happen,” Sechrest said. “This is a really good group that understands volleyball and played in a lot of pressure-type situations and they handle it well.”

The Jets maintained the momentum into the second set, seized control and never let up, but Fort Frye scratched and clawed its way back in the third set. It actually fought off a match point to knot the match at 24-all, but the Jets were simply too much.

“We came out prepared, but then one (bad) thing happened and we couldn’t dig ourselves out of the hole,” Fort Frye head coach Emily Tracewell said. “I think we were caught off guard after they pulled away in the first set and that seemed to carry over into the second set.”

The Jets were led on the stat sheet by the Sisters Kildow. Torre — just a sophomore — had 13 kills, 16 assists and five digs. Casey, who is a senior, had 13 kills, 20 assists and 12 digs for a triple double. Sophomore Reagan Vinskovich was impressive at the net, posting nine kills and six blocks. Baylee Rex added eight digs.

Fort Frye, meanwhile, was led by Karlee Ross, who had 15 kills. Makenna Long added six kills, while Khloee Ross had four. Cara McIntosh and Bella Schilling had 15 and 13 assists, respectively.

Lexie Huck and Jayden Wallace each had 10 digs.

Overall, Tracewell was pleased with the Cadets season, which included an OVAC Class 3A title earlier this month.

“This was probably one of Fort Frye’s best seasons in terms of having no weak spots,” Tracewell said. “I don’t think it should have ended this way, but, overall, it was a good season.”

Union Local, meanwhile, will play for a district championship on Saturday at noon at top-seeded and state-ranked Tusky Valley, which eliminated Hiland in four sets.
