UL rebounds from setback, routs Creek

UNION LOCAL’S Liam Vinskovich (0) shoots for two of his game-high 18 points Friday night as the Jets cruised past visiting Indian Creek, 47-28.

MORRISTOWN — Zach Delman, like many head coaches, wasn’t sure how his team would react after losing. Union Local had won 13 of 14 contests before being stunned at Martins Ferry in its last outing.

The Jets (14-4) came out strong, as expected with five seniors comprising the starting lineup. They led 23-7 after one quarter and then let the defense do the rest.

Union Local forced visiting Indian Creek (5-12) into 28 turnovers in rebounding with a 47-28 victory inside ‘The Hangar.’

“I know these guys were upset with the outcome the other night in Martins Ferry, but I had a feeling they would bounce back being the veteran team they are,” Delman said of his team. “I thought we did a nice job in the first quarter.”

Indeed they did. All five starters reached the scoring column as the Jets connected on 10-of-15 shots from the floor.

However, it was a different story for them — offensively — the remainder of the night.

“For some reason we look really good at times and then there are times when it looks like we are just going through the motions,” Delman assessed. “We seem to let teams hang around, but I thought our defense really stepped it up. Our halfcourt defense was solid and we caused a lot of turnovers. We got our hands on a lot of passes and things like that.”

Indian Creek charted 28 turnovers, the same number as points they scored. Veteran head coach Joe Dunleavy knows that won’t win you any games.

“We have to value the ball more. We just had too many turnovers and that has been our downfall this season,” Dunleavy noted. “I don’t have any excuses. I don’t have any answers.”

After torching the nets early, Union Local cooled off as it only mustered up 24 points over the final three periods.

“Offensively, we’re not where we need to be,” he admitted. “We shot really, really well in practice (on Thursday) like we are capable of and have done this season, but for whatever reasons, we didn’t shoot it well again tonight.”

Union Local tickled the twine on 20 of 45 shots (44 percent).

“We did have some kids step up and take the ball to the basket. Liam (Vinskovich) had a nice game attacking the rim,” Delman added. “I told him right after the game that the reason he played well tonight was that he practiced really well this week. I thought he had the best week of practice he’s had all season.”

Vinskovich paced Union Local with 18 points. Andrew Martin added 10, Nathan Meyer eight and Zac Bateman seven.

Logan Kuczykowski had seven points to lead the Redskins, who held a slim, 19-17, advantage off the glass behind six from Lucca Morelli who came off the bench.

Martin had half-a-dozen to lead the Jets.

Union Local had nine turnovers.

The same two teams meet again today at 1 p.m. in the Buckeye 8 third-place game, also in Morristown.
