Union Local mowed down by Oak Glen in 4A

WHEELING — Union Local hadn’t been in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference’s Tom Bechtel Softball Championship tournament in 12 years prior to Tuesday afternoon’s semi-final appearance against top-seeded Oak Glen.

The Jets won’t soon want to remember their latest appearance.

Union Local ran into an absolute buzzsaw by the name of Maddie McKay, who sliced through the Jets lineup to a tune of a five-inning perfect game in a 10-0 romp. The win sends Oak Glen (11-0) to the championship game against Edison, which took out Harrison Central in the second semifinal at the Chambers I-470 Complex.

McKay, who is committed to the University of Toledo’s 2022 recruiting class, mowed down the first nine Jets via the strikeout and finished with 13 Ks in the game.

“We’re very fortunate to have Maddie and she’s a nice luxury,” Oak Glen head coach Sherrie Garner said. “She gets keyed up and she’s an all-around player. Plus, she has some internal motivation from two years ago when we were here (in the OVAC).”

Being an all-around player was on display in the first inning. With Lizzie Kell on second, following an error, McKay took a Keira Gregor fastball over the left-field fence, putting the Golden Bears on top 2-0.

“When you have to beat one player, you have to show up for the game,” UL head coach Melissa Lahna said. “You have to get off the bus ready to play against McKay. We worked (Monday in practice for two-and-a-half hours on staying off the high pitch. We didn’t do it. We couldn’t make anything happen and we served up a meatball (pitching) and we got sauced. We talked about keeping the ball low. We didn’t execute.”

With McKay giving herself a 2-0 lead, the deficit for the Jets felt upwards of 20 runs.

McKay was flat dealing. She went to just one three-ball count the entire game and quickly erased that with a strikeout.

Meanwhile, the offense kept coming. The Golden Bears chased Gregor after three innings.

They added three runs in third and closed it out with five runs in the fifth.

Sarah Brown had two singles and two RBI, while Olivia Munoz had a double, single and two RBI. Kell and Sydney Brown each had a double. Senior Alexis Holden drove in a run.

“We played good defense and we got hitting throughout our lineup,” Garner said.
