Shadyside’s Gorby wins regional LJ

T-L File Photo/SETH STASKEY SHADYSIDE JUNIOR Paige Gorby jumped to a Division III regional championship during Friday’s meet at Massillon Perry. Gorby earned the right to compete in next weekend’s OHSAA State Championship meet at Westerville North.

MASSILLON — The invitations have been finalized.

With the OHSAA State Track and Field Championship slated to open in less than a week, Barnesville, Buckeye Trail, Shadyside, Steubenville Catholic and Shenandoah are all making plans to attend.

The regional meet at Perry High School proved to be as challenging as ever and when the dust settled Friday night, seven athletes in nine events have earned automatic bids with a couple of others awaiting word if their mark is good enough for one of the two at-large bids in each event.

The Division III state meet opens Friday morning at Westerville North High School.

GIRLS

Shadyside will be represented at the state meet once again.

Junior standout Paige Gorby qualified for her first state meet in the long jump. She did so in grand fashion, too.

Gorby leaped off the board to a personal-best mark of 16-10 during the qualifying round and it stood up en route to the regional title.

Gorby’s mark was more than a foot-and-a-half better than she produced during the district meet en route to finishing second.

Barnesville’s Anna Yater added to her state meet workload on Friday.

After claiming the gold medal in the shot put during Wednesday’s competition, Yater pocketed the silver medal in the discus with a mark of 115-10. She had the lead until the final throw of the competition.

Barnesville freshman March Bethel made a decision Friday to bypass the 1600 meter run to conserve energy to make a run toward an 800 meter run state berth.

The decision paid dividends.

Bethel qualified to the state by locking up the fourth spot with a time of 2:22.68. That mark was more than five seconds faster than what she ran at the district.

Steubenville Catholic Central junior Clara Symington advanced to the state meet in a pair of events. She finished third in the high hurdles in 15.64 and then authored the same place finish in the low hurdles in a time of 46.37.

BOYS

Shadyside and Buckeye Trail both qualified for the state meet on Wednesday in the pole vault.

The Tigers were led by senior Brendan Schrader who was second at 13-4 and freshman Andrew Osman, who placed third at 13-feet.

Trail will be represented by Brendan Bates, who was fourth at 12-8.

Steubenville Catholic’s Joe Rohde advanced in the 400 meter dash, posting a runner-up finish with a time of 50.32.

Shenandoah’s Shakur Payton qualified with a silver medal in the high jump, clearing 6-2.

On the track, the Zeps will be represented by senior Max McVicker. He is the regional champion in the 300 intermediate hurdles, skimming eight timbers in 39.98.
