Thompson, Jeffries win Belmont Hills CC title

The Spring 6-6-6 event was held last weekend at Belmont Hills Country Club.

The team of Bruce Thompson and Joe Jeffries won the First Flight with a score of 67. Jack Ralston and John Jeffries claimed the second-place prize with a 68.

There was a tie for third between the teams of Jason Newton and Clay Wood as well as Brian Delloma and Gary Young. Both duos posted a round of 69.

In the second flight, John Estate and Steve Mercer posted a 71 to win the flight. Jack Carpenter and Bill Sokolowski posted a 73 for second, while Michelle Anderson and Michele Abel finished with a 74 for third place.

Phil Pata Jr. And Michele Abel were the top two finishers in the closest to the pin contest on No. 14.

OGLEBAY PARK GOLF CLUB

The club held its third tournament of the season with 96 players taking part in the John Tarr III Memorial Tournament at Cadiz Country Club last Sunday. The event was a two-man, 100% best ball format.

Claiming the title by virtue of a scorecard playoff was the team of Jake Pennybacker and Clark Sambuco with a 60. Also posting a 60 were Tom Stillmak and Jesse Stillmak.

Signing for a round of 63, which was good enough for a tie for third were the teams of Nathan Skrzypek and Mike Pietranton as well as James Sponhaltz and Dave Ziggaceek.

Bill Gooch and Luke Marsh both posted a round of 64, while Jim Tysk and Joe Hartman posted a 64.

Three teams checked in with a round of 65. They included Todd Nickoles and John Tarr; Mike Bogers and Justin Paliswat; Jordan Saseen and Jeremy Saseen.

Tony Campbell and Tom Mitchell rounded out the top 10 with a round of 66.

Skill prizes were also awarded.

The closest to the pins went to Luke Marsh (No. 2), Tony Campbell (No. 8), Nate Skrzypek (No. 11) and Scott Jackson (No. 13). The closest to the pin on the second shot went to Mike Pietranton (No. 6) and Jay Davis (No. 12).

The longest putt was by Mike Bogers on No. 1. The longest drive for a player over the age of 60 was by Mike Wilson, while Robbie Geisel won the same award for those under 60 on No. 5.

Skins were recorded by Doug Lucas and Tom Stillmak.

COLLEGE GOLF

The NCAA Division III Golf National Tournament is slated to begin on Tuesday and run through Friday at Oglebay Park’s Spiedel Golf Club.

Cambridge grad Ian Smith was named All-OAC after finishing seventh in the conference tournament for Mount Union.

CLUB FITTING

If you’re looking to get golf clubs properly sized for you, Hole ‘N Run in Wheeling is hosting club fitting days. Taylor Made will be there on May 17, Cobra on May 20, Ping on May 25 and Callaway on June 4.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Play It Again Sports Medal and Handicap event was held on Sunday.

Mike Brickener led the way in the event with a round of 65. He was five shots clear of Art Lightner and eight shots better than Mel Hand. Roger Kupfer (76), Tony Coppa (78) and Ron Heatherly (78) rounded out the top five.

In the handicap scoring portion of the event, Mike Woods was the winner with a 63. Gary Mercer posted a 64, while John Bryan was third with a 65. Rich Colley had a round of 70.

Josh Green, Bob Green, Joe Wurtzbacher and Dave Stauver all finished with a round of 70.

THE RIVER Lady Pilots volleyball team will hold a scramble on Saturday, May 22 at Riverside Golf Course in Sardis. The entry fee is $200 for a team of four players. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. and all day food and beverages will be available. There will be a BBQ dinner after the round. THE INAUGURAL Special Wish Foundation Golf Scramble, sponsored by Trinity Health System, will be held on Saturday, May 22 at Fairway River Links in Rayland. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. The entry fee is $300 per team and it includes golf, cart, snacks, beverages, lunch and awards. Cash prizes will be given to the top three teams and various prizes and raffles will be also be held. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. THE BEALLSVILLE Lady Devils Basketball Boosters will hold a golf scramble on Saturday, May 15 at Switzerland of Ohio Country Club. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.. The first 18 registered teams will be accepted. The cost is $60 per player or $240 per team. The entry fee includes skins, chicken dinner, which will be made by the First and Goal Club. A BELMONT County golf scramble to benefit the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley is being planned for Friday, May 28 at Belmont Hills Country Club.

The event will begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and includes 18 holes, cart, lunch, drinks on the course, door prizes, and skill contests. The cost to enter a four-person team is $500. There are varying levels of sponsorships available, too. They range from platinum sponsor for $2,500 to hole sponsor for $150. The deadline to register is May 7.
