MAYNARD — It was neither a Rembrandt nor a Picasso. Heck it wasn’t even close to being a masterpiece, but Caden Price will take it.

The 2020 Shadyside High graduate worked his way through control problems in throwing a no-hitter Wednesday night as Maynard defeated visiting Shadyside, 10-1, in Ohio Valley Baseball League action on the Firemen’s Field diamond inside the Community Park.

Price, who attended and played baseball at John Marshall for his first three years in high school, only struck out three in his initial OVBL start. He did, however, issue eight base-on-balls and hit four Casketmakers among his 112 pitches, of which only 55 were strikes.

“I was a little every where. I started out on one side of the rubber but adjusted myself to where I was able to throw more strikes and not hit batters,” Price said. “My fastball started look pretty good later in the game, especially in the last inning.”

Of the 21 outs recorded by the Indians husky righthander, 11 of them were groundouts — including a pair of double plays — while six were popups and there was one Shadyside runner caught stealing, in addition to the three aforementioned strikeouts.

“He wanted the baseball. That’s what he told me before the game,” Maynard manager David Vicker said. “He did a good job of getting out of a couple tough innings, but heck, he threw a no-hitter.”

The lone run scored by Shadyside came in the third inning when Price walked Zeke Merryman with the bases loaded to force in a run.

Maynard (7-3) has won five games in a row since a 2-3 start.

“We’re playing good fundamental baseball right now. Our pitching has been really good and we’re starting to hit the ball all the way through our lineup,” Vicker said.

Jayden Starks, Hunter Westlake and Tyler Ramsey all recorded a single and double each, with Ramsey charting an RBI. Matt Busby singled and tripled to produce a run, while Mason Ramsey collected four runs batted in with a single and home run. B.A. Holloway had a run-scoring double as the winners banged out 11 hits.

Colin Holmes suffered the loss for Shadyside (0-10).

“We need to work on getting into deeper counts and putting the ball in play when were at bat,” Shadyside player/coach Zac Schnegg said. “Defensively, I think we’re pretty solid. We haven’t made many errors this year. Our pitching needs a little work, but that’s just finding guys who can pitch.

“This is our first year together and we only have one guy that is going to college to play baseball, so we’re a little overmatched against these guys on some nights,” Schnegg added. “We’ve shown some promise and some guys have shown self-improvement. Hopefully we can carry that over to Friday against Weirton.”

Maynard visits Weirton Sunday for a doubleheader.

AT WEIRTON, the Expos (9-1) exploded for five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back at Edwin J. Bowman Field.

Matt Carnahan singled and homered to produce three runs while Jake Stoner drove in a pair with a trio of one-base raps. Bryan Courts had a run-scoring double.

Jacob Bolander went the distance, striking out seven, walking two and scattering seven hits. He threw 112 pitches, with 74 being strikes.

Joey Nave and Adam Cowden evenly divided four singles. Nick Scott had a triple and Larry Bielewski had an RBI.

Moundsville hosts Barton Friday night at the Bob Montgomery Diamond at John Marshall High School.
