Estate-Smith capture BHCC member-guest championship

One of the highlight events of the golfing summer at Belmont Hills Country Club was held last weekend.

The 53rd annual BHCC Member-Guest Tournament drew a large field of players divided into six flights during a three-day event.

John Estate and Geoff Smith, who claimed the fourth flight title, won the overall crown and the coveted ‘Green Jackets’ that come with the Member-Guest crown.

Winning the other flight crowns were:

First Flight — Vic Wood and Roger Waialae

Second Flight — Jack Carpenter and Bob Maughmer

Third Flight — Justin DeMarchi and R.J. Zitzelsberger

Fourth Flight — Estadt and Smith

Fifth Flight — Larry Hobbs and Anthony Kirchner

Sixth Flight — Gary Trump and Phil Tarley

Along with the overall and flight winners, there are a bevy of skill prizes and events within the course of the tournament.

The Thursday Best Ball Championship went to Dave Humphrey and Todd Blake.

The Alternate Shot Tournament title went to Thadd Obecny II and Jim Brinsky.

Brad Betz claimed the Long Drive Championship with a 363-yard bomb.

Terry Foster and Scot Foster won the team putting contest.

John Timko won the Great Par 3 shootout, fending off Dan Wassick and Vic Wood, who finished second and third, respectively.

There was a tie for the couples putting contest between Thad Obecny II and Thomas as well as Heather Foster and Zach Azallion.

There was a tie for the 10 and under pool of the field between Andrew Paulus and Ryan Orth as well as Tom LeCron and Dustin Hudak.

SCRAMBLE RESULTS

The Barnesville Bowling Scramble was held last Saturday at Cambridge Country Club.

Tony Humphrey’s team finished first in the event with a score of 14 under par. They were two shots clear of a team from the VFW.

Winners of individual prizes were Brent Burkhart (ping putter), Caden Myers (Cobra Driver), Colby MacMillan (OSU Golf Bag), Jay Grear (Tommy Armour wedge), Bruce Sefert (Cleveland Golf wedge), Matt Hissom (Shamrock Golf Bag), Andie Howiler (OSU golf bag).

BELMONT HILLS JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

The Belmont Hills Country Club hosted a junior golf tournament last Monday.

St. Clairsville’s duo of Saul Crist and Will Foster both signed for a round of 77 and Crist was crowned the winner via a playoff. Barnesville senior-to-be Carter Wells fired an 82 to finish third in the 17-18 year old division.

Ethan Cook shot a solid round of 79 to win the 14-16 year old division. Mason Orndorff was second with a 81 and Colton Sprouls was third with an 83.

In the 12-13 year old division, Hayden Treadway prevailed with a round of 86. Kamden Kinyo was second with a 90. Nolan Zambori finished third with a 94.

St. Clairsville graduate Broc Crist shot a 1-under, 71 to win the collegiate division by five shots over Derek Graham.

On the girls’ side, Breanna Flood — a Barnesville student — prevailed with a 97, while Payten Clark was second in the 15-18 year old division.

Kennedy Little won the 12-14 year old division by eight shots over Grace Stephen.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Bordas and Bordas 3-man best event was held last Sunday.

The trio of Lightner, Kupfer and Heatherly posted a 60 to win by six shots over Colley and Coppa. Wade and Woods were third with a 73.

Ennis, Green and Klamut claimed the handicap scoring with a 52.

ACE

Tony Coppa recorded an ace on No. 5 at Oglebay’s Crispin Course. He used a wedge on the 89-yard shot, which was witnessed by Mike Neal, Jim Glasser and Jay Tazar.

KALKREUTH AMATEUR

One of the area’s premier amateur golf tournaments is quickly approaching.

The annual Kalkreuth Amateur Championship will be held at Oglebay Park’s Speidel Golf Club on July 24 and 25.

The proceeds of the event continue to benefit the Easter Seals. The event has been generating an between $25,000 and $30,000 for the Easter Seals on the yearly.

More information will be forthcoming in the days and weeks.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE JUNIOR GOLF INVITATIONAL

The St. Clairsville golf program will hold a junior tournament at Belmont Hills Country Club on Monday, July 19. The event is open to boys and girls ages 12 through college. There will be separate divisions based on ages. Boys 12U and girls 13U will play a 9-hole event. Boys 13-15, 16-18, girls 14-15 and 16-18 as well as college-aged players will play 18. There will be different tees for the different age groups as well.

The cost to enter is $35 for the 9-hole event and boys aged 13 and older and girls 14 and older the entry fee is $45. For more information, please contact Michele Merritt at 740-391-5678.

NICK GAUDINO JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

The inaugural Nick Gaudino Memorial Junior Golf Tournament will be held on Tuesday, July 20 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. It will be a nine-hole tournament with six divisions and is slated for the first group to tee off at 12:45 p.m.

The tournament will be broken down into separate boys and girls divisions for 10th through 12th grade, 8th and 9th grader and seventh grade and below. The top three placers in each division, both boys and girls, will receive a trophy. Pizza and pop will be provided for each participant after the event. The entry fee is $8. Players in grades seventh grade and under may ride on a cart, with their parents, but other players must walk and carry their clubs or utilize a pull cart.

According to a release, Gaudino was a resident of Triadelphia and who caddied in his teenage years at Wheeling Park Golf Course. He was drafted to serve in the army in WWII and made four amphibious landings in the South Pacific. In his fourth landing, he was seriously wounded, resulting him being multiply handicapped throughout the rest of his life. He spent nearly four years recovering in an army hospital. After his release from the hospital and the service, he played golf (mostly one handed) for more than 30 years as a member of the Wheeling Park and Oglebay Golf Clubs.

THE 11TH Annual Vance Deihl Memorial Scholarship Scramble is being held on Saturday, July 17 at Cadiz Country Club. The entry fee is $75 per player with checks made payable to Vance Deihl Memorial Scholarship Fund. Please call to register and for tee times at 740-635-2069. The fee includes refreshments on the course, lunch at first turn, dinner after tournament, and prizes.

Deihl was a teacher, coach, and athletic trainer at Martins Ferry High School for 30 years. All proceeds benefit scholarships for Martins Ferry High School seniors. THE ANNUAL YMCA Scramble is slated for Friday, July 23 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. The cost is $250 per four-person team.

THE OHIO Valley Wrestling Officials Association will hold its annual golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 14 at Cadiz Country Club. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. and dinner is slated to be served at approximately 6 p.m. The entry fee is $260 per four-person team and that fee includes golf, prizes, skins game, dinner and beverages. There will be prizes for the longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin on selected par 3 holes. Sponsorship opportunities are also available, including a $500 major sponsor which includes entry for one team. There are also $100 honor roll sponsor and $50 hole sponsorships available.
