Martins Ferry’s Goff to play baseball at WU

MARTINS FERRY — When selecting a college a lot of things beyond athletics come into play.

As it pertains to Martins Ferry senior Chase Goff, Wheeling University checked all of the boxes.

After doing his due diligence to the process, Goff has elected to continue his baseball and academic careers with the Cardinals.

“Wheeling was easily the best choice,” Goff said. “They gave me a great offer, have great academics and baseball program. Plus, the campus is nice and it’s close to home.”

Goff had the opportunity to continue his baseball career because of a strong career with the Purple Riders where he was the team’s every day catcher for the last couple of seasons.

As a senior, Goff batted at a .386 clip and drove in 19 runs in helping the Purple to a district and OVAC Class 3A runner-up finish.

Defensively, Goff was extremely steady behind the plate. Whether it was his handling of the pitching staff, receiving of the ball or ability to throw out runners, Goff was impressive.

“I can improve in every aspect of my game,” Goff admitted. “I could definitely use the gym though to continue to get stronger.”

Goff was recognized for his fine senior season by being chosen for the OVAC and Eastern District All-Star Games. He was also named All-OVAC and All-Times Leader.

But, for him, his high school career will boil down to the wins and losses.

“I look back at all of the games, regardless of the outcome, and see how I became the player I am today,” Goff continued.

Goff has spent much of this summer playing for St. Clairsville American Legion Post 159.

Along with baseball, Goff was a football standout, lettering three yearns and earning All-Eastern District in 2020. He was a state qualifier in wrestling during his junior season. He was an alternate as a senior.

Away from athletics, Goff is a member of the honor roll and the Staying Clean Club.

Chase, who is the son of Robert and Katrina Goff, plans to major in education.
