Fans attending the 75th OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game on July 24 at Wheeling Island Stadium can probably expect the ball to be in the air a good bit when West Virginia is on offense.

And no one could blame Mountain State head coach B.J. Depew, who has named his wide receivers for the game.

“We really like the entire skill set and versatility of the receiving group,” Depew said. “There is a lot of speed there, too. Some of the guys even took snaps at their schools and their coaches found creative ways to use their skills. We plan to have three and four (receivers) on the field most of the game.”

The receiving candidates are Kobe Hill (Linsly), Payton Marling (Wheeling Central), Lucky Pulice (Madonna), Levi Rice (South) and Torrence Walker (Wheeling Park).

Here’s a capsule look at the West Virginia receivers:

KOBE HILL, Linsly — This former Cadet shined in multiple spots on the offensive side of the ball for Depew’s squad the last several seasons.

The 5-10, 165 pounder caught 83 passes for 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns. He rushed 70 times for 315 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 33-of-51 passes for 465 yards and four more touchdowns.

Hill was named All-OVAC, All-Valley and All-Times Leader. He was also his team’s MVP.

Away from football, Hill was a three-year letterman in baseball, a member of Drug Free Club, Minding your Mind Club and a Youth Group leader.

Kobe, who is undecided about his college plans, is the son of Justin and Carrie Hill.

PAYTON MARLING, Wheeling Central — This former Maroon Knight was a big-play threat in a myriad of capacities for Coach Mike Young’s team.

The 6-foot, 185 pounder caught 19 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown. He rushed for 563 yards and six touchdowns and passed for 158 yards. Defensively, he posted 55 tackles, recovered a fumble and posted a sack.

Marling’s fine season didn’t go unnoticed. He was named First Team All-State Class A for the second straight season. He was also named All-OVAC and All-Valley.

Along with football, Marling was a three-year letterman in track and field.

Payton, who is planning to continue his football career at Wheeling University, is the son of Julie and Mark Joseph and Tim Marling.

LUCKY PULICE, Madonna — This former Blue Don was a steady contributor on both sides of the ball for Coach Dan Rovira’s club.

Pulice caught 860 yards worth of passes and scored 10 touchdowns. From his strong safety spot, he posted 70 tackles, recorded five tackles for loss, broke up four passes, picked off three and blocked a punt for a touchdown.

Along with football, Pulice was a multi-year letterman in basketball. He also was a member of the National Honor Society and served on the prom committee.

Lucky is the son of Jamie Pulice and Kelly Pulice.

LEVI RICE, Parkersburg South — This former Patriot was a threat with the ball every time he touched it for Coach Nathan Tanner’s team.

The 6-2, 175 pounder had more than 600 all-purpose yards as a senior and took two kicks back for a touchdown. As a junior, he caught 25 passes for 553 yards and recorded seven touchdowns.

Also a standout in the classroom, Rice was a member of the Principal’s List all four years of high school. He also played basketball and ran track.

Levi, who is the son of Sean and Christy Rice, plans to attend the University of Charleston.

TORRENCE WALKER, Wheeling Park — This speedster was a game breaker for Coach Chris Daugherty’s team.

The 6-foot, 175 pounder caught 17 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns. He also took two kicks back for touchdowns.

On top of football, Walker was the OVAC’s fastest man on the track. He posted times of 10.43, 21.23 and 48.45 in the three short sprints. He won the Class AAA state championship in all three events. He also recently finished sixth in the 100M in a national high school meet in Eugene, Ore.

Torrence, who is the son of Terry Walker and Lonnette Walker, will attend Virginia Tech and continue his track career.
