PREP ROUNDUP: Monroe boys win; St. C. swimmers shine

OLD WASHINGTON — Monroe Central won for the third consecutive outing Thursday evening, fending off Buckeye Trail, 54-43.

The Seminoles were led by Tucker Howell’s 18. Jake Swisher added 15 and Colin Kroll recorded nine.

Indian Creek 53, Buckeye Local 42

CONNORVILLE — The Panthers were dealt a tough setback Thursday, falling to the invading Redskins.

Creek, which shot an astounding 24 of 42 from the foul line, was paced by Logan Shaffer’s 15.

Buckeye Local, meanwhile, was led by Ryan Deitch and Braydon Walker. Each had nine.

GIRLS

BASKETBALL

HANNIBAL — River jumped out on Toronto and never looked back en route to a 74-36 victory.

The Pilots were led by junior Hannah Raper’s 26 and sophomore Kelsey Harlan, who went for 16. Tessa Primm added 11.

Beallsville 50, Barnesville 24

BEALLSVILLE — The Blue Devils stayed in hot in running their record to 10-2 on the season with another lop-sided victory.

Beallsville was led by Hallie Bommer’s 12 and Kaylee Hagan finished with 11.

St. Clairsville 48, Cambridge 38

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Red Devils celebrated senior night and avenged an earlier loss in the process by toppling Cambridge.

St. Clairsville was paced by senior Alexis Thoburn, who scored 16, including 12 in the first quarter. Classmate Shae Brookover added 11. Junior Megan Malin poured in 13.

SWIMMING

St. C. Girls Finish Second

LODI — The Red Devil girls finished second by four points to champion Shelby Thursday afternoon in the Cloverleaf Stampede.

St. Clairsville finished with 190 points, including seven victories.

Senior standout Casadie DiBetta put forth an impressive meet, winning the 200Im in 2:14.90 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.78.

Senior Kylie McKeegan won the 50 free in 26.14.

Senior Olivia Moyer pocketed the 100 fly victory with a time of 1:03.09.

Senior Brenna Planey posted a win in the 100 free with a 57.07.

The aforementioned individual winners got the meet started by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:55.22. The same quartet claimed the 200 free relay in 1:44.51.

The Red Devil boys received a victory from Jack Gasber in the 100 breaststroke.

WRESTLING

River’s Bier Wins Title

BEVERLY — River’s Marshall Bier (285) won a championship at the Fort Frye Invitational Thursday. He was one of four Pilots to reach the awards podium.

Bier didn’t waste any time in the championship finals with a 28-second pin. It was his fifth of the tournament and fourth in the first period.

Nick Macheca (190) and Brayden Strawn (215) both finished second. Maddox Mozena (165) was fourth.

River finished eighth as a team.

Barnesville wrestlers shine

ASHLAND — After having its initially scheduled trip to Brecksville canceled due to COVID-19 issues at the host school, the Shamrocks landed in the Ashland Holiday Invitational.

Coach Jayson Stephens’ team finished 11th in the 20-team field.

Dakota King led the Shamrocks individually with a runner-up finish. Skyler King (fourth), Ayden King (fifth) and Griffen Stephen (sixth) also placed.
