Shadyside, Barnesville girls fare well

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The Fort Frye and Steubenville Catholic Central girls track teams competed just a couple of weeks ago at Red Devil Stadium and left carrying their respective OVAC Class championship trophy.

Friday evening the two deep and talented squads locked horns head-to-head and the Cadets, who won the OVAC 3A title, had just a little too much and claimed the Eastern District’s Division III track title by six points over the Crusaders, 80-74.

Maybe more importantly than the trophy, those teams and numerous other area squads had strong afternoons in terms of qualifying for next week’s regional meet, which opens Wednesday afternoon at Massillon Perry.

The Crusaders qualified in five events.

Leading the way is senior standout Clara Symington, who is headed for the regional in both hurdle events as a district champion. She won the highs in 17-flat and came back later to claim the lows in 46.30.

Junior Theresa Kerker was third in the highs in 17.46 and added a bronze in the lows with a 49.92.

The Crusaders captured the 4×2 relay with a team of Kerker, Kathryn Bolster, Rebecca Bolster and Symington. The quartet turned in a 1:50.18.

Catholic Central added the 4×4 title to their resume when the team of Kathryn Bolster, Kerker, Elizabeth Schmiesing and Symington turned in a 4:10.33 to win by more than five seconds.

Kathryn Bolster was also second in the 400 in 64.03, which was one place ahead of Elizabeth Schmiesing, who ran a 64.23.

Shadyside finished fifth in the team standings with 60 points.

Leading the way for Coach Jenna Coyne’s team was senior Paige Gorby, who is seeking her second straight trip to state. She won the long jump with a mark of 17-2. She also placed second in the 100 in 13.95.

Junior Kenzy Beckett was the district champion in the 3200 meter run, posting a 12:28.03. She also finished third in the 1600 with a time of 5:47-flat.

The Tigers’ 4×1 team of Mia Boatman, Gorby, Heather Good and Kierstyn Elerick posted a 52.93 to win the district title.

Elerick was an individual qualifier in the high hurdles, finishing second in 17.29.

Barnesville, which placed sixth in the meet with 55 points, will enter in three individual events and a relay.

Leading the way for the Shamrocks is senior thrower Anna Yater. She posted a pair of runner-up finishes. She launched the shot put to a mark of 38-9 ½ to win that event during Tuesday’s action and she added a silver in the discus with a mark of 113-10.

The lone district champion for the Shamrocks, however, was sophomore Marah Bethel. She won the 800 in 2:22.46.

The Shamrocks’ 4×2 advanced with a 1:52.88. The team consists of Mia Yee, Lexi Grear, Ayla Yater and Britnee Cassidy.

Bellaire will be led to the regional by senior thrower Katelyn Hart, who won the discus. She twirled her platter to a mark of 114-10.

Big Reds’ junior Abby Craig advanced as the fourth qualifier in the highs in 18.46.

River will send a pair of entrants to the regional.

Sophomore Mara Beard was fourth in the 3200 in 13:02.87, while junior Chloe Honeycutt was third in the long jump with a mark of 15-11.
