Throughout his adult life, the late Ron Mauck was dedicated to youth.

Whether it was during his career as an athletic administrator at Brooke High School or throughout his work with the OVAC All-Star Football Game or obviously in his beloved sport of wrestling where the OVAC Tournament bears his name, Mauck was continually out to serve the youth of the Ohio Valley.

Since his passing in August of last year, Mauck’s family and his OVAC and wrestling “family” have been working to make sure that children of the Ohio Valley continue to feel Mauck’s impact.

The inaugural Ron Mauck Memorial Wrestling Scholarship was presented at last Tuesday’s OVAC Banquet of Champions to Indian Creek’s Dominic Paterra, who scripted a brilliant prep career, including back-to-back appearances in the Division II state championship match.

Those who knew and loved Mauck are now working to make sure that the scholarship can continue for many years to come and possibly even increase in value.

“My dad has always talked about how much that pap had done for the OVAC and for kids,” Mauck’s granddaughter, Abby, recalled. “We want everyone to remember what he’s done because he truly gave his life to the Ohio Valley, sports and kids.”

The inaugural Ron Mauck Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing is scheduled for Friday, July 9 at the Wheeling Country Club.

“Being able to host this tournament means a lot to us,” said Melissa Mauck, who is Ron’s daughter-in-law. “Ron had a huge impact on the community and for young individuals throughout all of the school systems. He was just a remarkable man and anyone who knew him, loved him.”

Mauck worked for more than 60 years with the youth of the Ohio Valley. He served on numerous committees throughout the conference along with his direct involvement with the wrestling tournament and football all-star game.

“We’re hoping that this (scholarship) will be able to help some of these young men and women move into the college and help them pursue their respective career paths,” Melissa Mauck continued.

The fundraising for the scholarship actually began immediately upon the announcement of the formation of the scholarship. The Ohio Valley Wrestling Officials made the initial donation to the family for the scholarship and the golf scramble was suggested by Eric Mauck, Ron’s son.

Ron’s other son, Jay, was appointed the chairman of the event and has formed a committee that includes: Dan Doyle, Bob Koch, Eric Mauck, Tom and Linda Myers, Tom Rataiczak, Dr. Bill Welker and Rich Conwell.

The tournament is still accepting registrations and the cost to play is $100 per player. The tournament will begin at 1 p.m. with shotgun start and dinner and prizes are expected to begin at approximately 6 p.m.

The committee is also accepting sponsorships as well. There are six levels of sponsorship, including gold level for $3,000 down to a hole sponsor for $100.
