High School Roundup: Martins Ferry, Union Local Volleyball Prevails In Postseason

MARTINS FERRY – No OVAC Championship hangover for Martins Ferry.

Less than a week after earning the Class 3A title, the Purple Riders eliminated Coshocton in four sets Thursday night in an Ohio Division V Eastern District sectional tournament contest inside Tolbert Gymnasium. They won by scores of 25-17, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-21.

Martins Ferry, the No. 2 seed, hosts No. 4 Tuscarawas Valley which ousted No. 7 Barnesville, 25-12, 25-9 and 25-8, on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Union Local Sweeps

MORRISTOWN – The top-seeded Jets bounced back from their OVAC Class 4A title tilt loss to Beaver Local by rolling past visiting West Muskingum inside ‘The Hangar’ by scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-20.

Union Local now hosts No. 3 Fairless on Tuesday, also at 6.

Ameera Saunders stuffed the stat sheet with 22 kills, four digs, two assists, two blocks and a pair of service aces. Delaney Butler added 31 assists, seven digs and two kills, while Laken Vinskovich charted 11 kills and seven digs.

BOYS SOCCER

Wheeling Park 5, Parkersburg 0

WHEELING – Dani Brazal Morcillo scored two goals and assisted on a third as the Patriots blanked the visiting Big Reds. Wilson Hanna had a goal and two helpers while Ike Aderholt and Aiden McCrosky had net-finders. Isaac Welling also logged an assist.

Jacob Robisnon had one save in earning the shutout.

Wheeling Park is back in action as highly regarded Beckley Woodrow Wilson visits for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday.

Pilots Fall In Postseason To Strasburg-Franklin

STRASBURG — No. 5 River pushed the No. 4 Strasburg-Franklin Tigers to the limit on the road Wednesday, but came up just short, falling to the Tigers 25-14, 19-25, 25-16, 19-25, 15-2 in sectionals.

Along the River lineup, Hallie Hammel finished with 21 kills and 25 digs, Mallarie Maddy had 16 kills and 18 digs, while Maci Isaly had seven kills in addition to setting up her teammates with 36 assists.

Zoey Fox put down four blocks on the night for the Pilots. Aubrey Fetty led the team in digs with 32, as well as notching two service aces.

GIRLS SOCCER

Central Shuts Out Ravenswood

WHEELING — 16th Street Field witnessed another shutout victory on Wednesday, with the Maroon Knights defeating the Red Devils 8-0 to move to 16-2-1 after the late-season contest.

Seneca Heller and Mariah Ratcliffe each totaled a brace of goals, with Rylee Wright, Adie Payton, Elizabeth Steele and Kayleigh Whittington also all scoring.

Heller also had two assists, most on the team, while Elah Konkle, Loni Kusic, Gianna Konkle, Berklee Heller, Mariah Ratcliffe and Sara Zende also notched assists.

Bella Fitzsimmons and Maddie Kirchner split time in-goal, combining for four saves in the shoutout.
