Pitching a strength for Martins Ferry baseball

MARTINS FERRY — Anthony Reasbeck finds himself in the same boat as many baseball coaches this spring.

The veteran Purple Rider skipper looks at his roster and likes his club. But, because it’s been basically two years since they’ve played a varsity baseball game high atop the Purple City, there are plenty of questions, too.

“I have absolutely no idea what to expect coming into this season,” Reasbeck said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we won 18 or we won eight. I didn’t think missing an entire year would be as huge of a deal as it has turned out to be.”

Pitching appears to be a strength for the Riders. Actually, depth is there, too.

Reasbeck believes he has two aces at his disposal in senior Trevor Hanson and junior Colby Shriver.

Other viable options in the Rider rotation are senior Logan Meeker, senior Logan Smith, junior Dallas Stemkowski, junior Jackson Romshak, junior Colin Sneadeker and sophomore Conner Probst.

The Rider pitchers will have the luxury of throwing to one of the area’s top catchers in senior Chase Goff. He’s backed up by classmate Noah Duck, who saw some varsity innings as a sophomore.

When he’s not on the mound, Smith will be penciled in at first base.

Hanson will handle third base when it’s not his turn in the rotation. Sophomore Connor Probst will take over the every day shortstop duties, while Colten Reddinger is expected to be the second baseman. Sneadeker will be at the hot corner. Shriver can play in the middle infield, too.

Around the outfield, senior Alex Bennett is expected to hold down left field, while sophomore Brayden Maine will roam in center. Right field could be a platoon with senior Kameron Hughes and Meeker.

Other juniors vying for at bats are Colten Larkins (1B), Quamari Lacy (outfield), Colten Goddard (outfield), Jesse Nagel (1B), Josh Dagen (outfield).

Sophomore outfielders seeking time are Robert Gorshe, Joe Green, Trey Regis and Jonathon Rossano.

The freshmen class consists of Jakob Carrothers, Paul Haegy, Turner Kroll, Stephen Cole, Nathan Ferrion, Travis Trout, Barron Lucey and Mason Reddinger.
