WHEELING -- Nurses from Wheeling Hospital and its affiliates Belmont Community Hospital, Harrison Community Hospital and the Bishop Joseph H. Hodges Continuous Care Center were honored Wednesday with Nurse Excellence Awards as part of National Nurses Week.

National Nurses Week focuses attention on the diverse ways America's nurses work to save lives and to improve the health of millions of individuals. The American Nurses Association has designated 2017 as the "Year of the Healthy Nurse," and the theme for this year's Nurses Week is "Nursing: the Balance of Mind, Body and Spirit." It's all about celebrating nurses who lead the charge for health and wellness. National Nurses Week coincides with the May 12 birthday of Florence Nightingale and is a celebration of her legacy as the founder of modern nursing.

Jay Nelson, a certified registered nurse anesthetist at Wheeling Hospital, received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ron Violi, CEO of Wheeling Hospital, said, "This week is set aside nationally to pay tribute to the nursing profession and we are pleased to participate. However, it's not just once a year we recognize the good work of our nurses: we appreciate their efforts every day. We're truly proud of them."

Wheeling Hospital Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Stahl said, "At all of our facilities, our nurses' daily commitment to our patients demonstrates perfectly why we honor each and every one of them.
