Harrison County promotes bike safety

SCIO — Several local businesses and agencies are helping to promote safe and fun bicycling for local youth.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, in conjunction with several local volunteer fire departments, Bakers IGA, and Kovarik Excavating will host a Bicycle Safety Day from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. today at Bakers IGA in Scio. The event will feature safety tips being shared from professionals to bike riders of all ages, to help ensure that everyone is safe as they enjoy the popular outdoor activity.

According to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, about 9 million individuals take bike trips daily in the United States, according to data from a 2009 study; 18 percent of Americans take at least one bike trip during the summer, if not more. Biking is becoming an increasingly popular way for Americans, especially those who live in larger cities, to get to and from work. Biking is better for the environment than traveling by car, producing no carbon emissions or other gases, and its healthy for the rider because it provides a good workout. Harrison County has several options for cyclists, including a loop around the lake at Sally Buffalo Park and the Conotton Creek Trail, an 11-mile path that provides a smooth and enjoyable ride.

Unfortunately, riding a bike is not without risks. Accidents can happen, especially as the rider is exposed to the elements and other factors. Without protective cover like that offered by a car, a collision can result in serious injury or possibly death. Bike riders must follow the rules of the road the same as any other vehicle to help prevent collisions with cars. It is also recommended that riders wear a helmet to protect from injury in case of some kind of accident. Ohio does not have any overall helmet law, instead relying on local ordinances and policies to enforce safety measures. Cadiz and the surrounding areas have no such policies, but local officials still encourage bike riders to don a helmet when they set out to enjoy a ride.

The Bicycle Safety Day will include a helmet giveaway for participants who show up with bikes, donated by Kovarik Excavating. Participants can also enjoy a free lunch, with Bakers IGA providing hot dogs and chips. Kovarik secretary Amee Glaser said the company is happy to help donate to the cause, especially if it helps keep the community safe.

“Damian donates a lot of stuff,” she said, referring to Damian Kovarik, the owner of the company. “He donates a lot of uniforms to football teams, cheerleaders, groups like that. We donate a lot, especially if it’s within our community.”
