First responders called to conduct swift water rescue

POWHATAN POINT — Police and fire officials are conducting a swift water rescue this morning in Powhatan Point.

According to Belmont County dispatch, the rescue attempt is occurring in a creek along Ohio 148. The Belmont County Sheriff’s Department, Powhatan Volunteer Fire Department, Wheeling Fire Department’s Swift Water Rescue Team and other agencies all are at the scene.

According to published reports, the rescue effort became necessary after a motorist drove their vehicle into a flooded area of road.

Meanwhile, fire and police officials throughout the region are reporting flooding along low-lying roads in the Northern Panhandle and Belmont and Jefferson counties in East Ohio.

Debris and ponding water are making travel difficult in many areas including along GC&P and Dement roads in Ohio County. Several other roads, including Castleman Run and Short Creek Road are impassable and motorists are urged to stay out of standing water.

Some flooded basements have been reported in the Elm Grove area.

Kings Creek Road in Hancock County is closed and residents are being evacuated from flooded areas.

Moundsville fire fighters responded to a garage fire with possible explosion this morning on Diamond Avenue near 12th Street. Flooding also is reported in that area.

Portions of W.Va. 2 in Wetzel County are under water.
