Belmont, Harrison counties prepare for election

CADIZ — With the May 8 primary election approaching, candidates in Harrison and Belmont counties are preparing for the big day.

In Harrison County, the positions that will see party nominees selected in the spring election are the county auditor’s seat and a county commission seat. So far, two candidates have filed for the auditor’s seat — incumbent Patrick Moore, a Democrat, and newcomer Allison Anderson, a Republican.

Also on the ballot is a Harrison County commissioners seat currently held by Don Bethel, a Republican. As of Wednesday, the only other candidate to file for the position is Democrat Danny Henry. Candidates have until Wednesday to file for office. Officials in the county don’t think that the election will see any particularly different numbers than in the past as far as voter turnout goes.

“Since it’s a primary, I don’t think it would be any bigger than our general in 2017,” said Ruby Foutz, director of the board of elections. Foutz added that Harrison County voters shouldn’t see any changes in voting procedures or polling locations for the election.

In Belmont County, the auditor and commissioners seats are also on the table. Auditor Roger Conroy, a Democrat, has filed for re-election, while Pease Township trustee and former Belmont County commissioner Mike Bianconi, a Democrat has filed for the seat currently held by Democrat Mark Thomas, who has also filed for re-election.

Also filing for the commissoner’s seat as Democrats are Angela Hafield and Chuck Probst, with Jerry Echemann and Christopher Gagin filing on the Republican side.

Belmont County Board of Elections Director Bill Shubat said that while the board doesn’t see any new voting procedures, they are discussing moving a polling location from the James Carnes Center in St. Clairsville to the Bethesda Christian Church in Bethesda.

“The board hasn’t made any decision yet, but will probably do so in future meetings,” Shubat said.
