St. Clairsville tops triangular
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Debuting St. Clairsville won both ends of a triangular high school wrestling match with Bridgeport and Cambridge Wednesday night on John Jenkins Court inside St. Clairsville High School. The Red Devils rolled to victories over the Bulldogs, 55-23, and the Bobcats, 54-18.
Eight St. Clairsville matmen picked up two wins each. They included Gannon Kazmirski (106), Jason DeNoble (113), Koen Kish (120), Quintin Elerick (132), Austin DaRe (145/152), Derek Witsberger (195), Justice McCamick (220) and Trey Delguzzo (285).
DeNoble was the lone Red Devil to collect two pins. Delguzzo recorded a pin and decision.
“We talked about coming out here tonight and going 2-0,” St. Clairsville head coach Joel Sansone said. “Right now we’re working the kids to try and get them into the top 4 of their weight classes for the OVAC Tournament.
“All I asked of them tonight was to go out there and give it their all,” he continued. “If they do that, then the team scores will take care of themselves.
“We wrestled two quality programs tonight that had tournaments under their belts already. Some of the kids we faced had 4-5 matches already, but we were able to come out on top.”
Bridgeport went 1-1 on the night as it rallied from deficits of 30-6 and 41-18 with four bouts remaining to win 42-41 over Cambridge. The Bobcats were penalized a team point when a wrestler dropped the straps on his singlet while still on the mat.
“We battled in that match,” Bridgeport head coach David Nelson said of the Cambridge dual. “We knew it was going to be close. I’m really proud of my guys. I thought we wrestled hard and tough in both matches.
“We’re still getting guys down to weight,” Nelson added. “St. Clairsville has a really good team.
Three Bulldogs were perfect in both duals. They were Christian Waterman (106/120); Mason Kuneff (160/170) and Tino Kusic (182).
