Area athletes clinch regional track and field appearances

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Several area athletes have formally extended their season in track and field.

District competition got under way Tuesday evening with Division III competing at St. Clairsville’s Red Devil Stadium. The top four finishers in each final advance to the regional that opens one week from today at Perry High School in Massillon.

The remaining field events and running finals will be held on Friday back at Red Devil Stadium. Division II schools begin their quest for the regional on Thursday.

GIRLS

Bellaire picked up a victory in the shot put thanks to senior Brittany Falcone, who won by more than a foot with a mark of 35-feet.

Senior Michaela Flaherty also qualified in the high jump. She finished third with a 4-10 clearance.

Shadyside’s 4×8 team of Baylee Wach, Cali Weber, Kamdyn Elerick and Abbie Brown ran a 10:39.22 to finish second and qualify.

Beallsville’s Jaydn Gabel was the district runnerup in the high jump at 4-10.

BOYS

Shadyside qualified its 4×8 team of Adam Davis, Wyatt Schrader, Jordan Joseph and Chase Stewart to the next week of competition with a 8:51.30.

The Tigers also advanced both senior Dale Hawthorne (13-6) an sophomore Brendan Schrader (13-0) in the pole vault. They finished the competition third and fourth, respectively.

Bridgeport senior standout Kevin Herink heads to Massillon Perry as a district champion in the discus. He won the platter event with a mark of 142-0.
