Two Wheeling-based greyhounds are in the hunt for a spot in the final of the $75,000 World Classic at Mardi Gras (Hollywood) in Florida.
After the first semifinal round Wednesday evening, Lester Raines Kennel’s Kelsos Lorenzo is second in points with 29 while Steubenville Kennel’s Kiowa Power Pak is tied for third with 28 points. OYA Tom Terrific leads all qualifiers with 33 points.
The second semifinal round is set for Saturday evening with the championship final on Friday evening, March 26.
Kiowa Power Pak turned in one of the most impressive performances of Wednesday’s semifinal round.
Breaking last from the six hole, Power Pak found the rail and moved up to fourth heading down the backside – a good 10 lengths behind the leaders. Gradually making up ground, Power Pak moved up to third heading home before unleashing his powerful stretch rush to get up by a length at the wire.
Kelsos Lorenzo, coming off back-to-back victories in the first two rounds, was in position to make it three in a row but experienced trouble with frontrunner TMC’s Trail Boss as the two hit the homestretch. Lorenzo lost valuable momentum but still was able to finish fourth.
In addition to Kiowa Power Pak, greyhounds posting semifinal wins Wednesday were JS Xtrememachine, Starz Majesty, JD Commodore and OYA Tom Terrific.
A third Wheeling greyhound, Tam Hootie Eye, did not make the semifinal round after experiencing trouble in both of his early races.
