Appreciating those who contributed to success

Well, another fantastic Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine is in the books, and we could not have done it without help and support from all corners of the Ohio Valley. For me, the children’s events were a primary focus. As coordinator of the Timy Tot Trot, sponsored by WVU Medicine Children’s, I put a lot of time and effort into making sure we have plenty of ways to entertain and delight families and young children who come to run the noncompetitive race. We offer games such as corn bag tosses and oversized checkers, bubble machines, colorful signs, ...

Friendship forged in adversity yields legacy for Appalachian Ohio

Journalist. Hostage. Professor. Business owner. Throughout his lifetime, Terry Anderson served multiple roles. But to many in Appalachian Ohio, his greatest legacy is rooted in a little-known detail embedded in his most well-known story. While serving as a correspondent for the Associated Press in Lebanon in 1985, Anderson was kidnapped by Shiite Muslim extremists, who held him hostage for more than six years. There, he met Father Lawrence Martin Jenco, a Roman Catholic priest and director of Catholic Relief Services in Beirut, who also was being held captive. Even in ...

Commencement: A time for new beginnings

Last weekend Lynnda and I attended our oldest granddaughter’s commencement (graduation) from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. We have three other graduates in our family this year. Two from high school and one from eighth grade. One grandson is headed to the U.S. Air Force. Her parents, siblings and golden retriever were hundreds of miles away in Maryland. She didn’t know anyone on campus and had to ...

I can understand that, since I haven’t been a runner on a regular basis since I was in college. In fact, I haven’t even made time to walk regularly for exercise in more than a year. So, I can see how the thouhght of running a half marathon or walking a 5K would be intimidating to many. But I assure you there is so much more than that to our Wellness Weekend. My role in the events has to do ...

Remembering Mom this Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day will be the 46th Mother’s Day without my mother being physically alive. I only had 17 Mother’s Days with her, and yet I can’t stop thinking about her from time to time. I lost my mother to cancer when I was 17 years old. She had three forms of cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer and a brain cancer. I don’t think there is a day I don’t still think about her. She died when she was 36 years old. If your mother is alive, honor her. I am sure she made mistakes, but she’s still your mother. Some mothers have given up their job to stay at home to take care ...
