Nondenominational Christians continue to grow

The Nov. 17 CBS Evening News “Eye on America” report focused on what is considered a rising trend of Christians now attending nondenominational churches. Quoting research from the General Social Survey, the report mentioned that in 1972, “fewer than 3% of Americans identified as nondenominational Christians.” Today, close to 40 million people identify as such. Stories like this always pique my interest due to my upbringing in a traditional Southern Black Baptist church in Athens, Ga., during the 1970s and ‘80s. As a child, I often wondered what the difference was between being ...

Mamdani could ease Trump’s return to New York City

There’s no mystery why Zohran Mamdani wanted to get along with Donald Trump. The president threatened New York City with funding cuts, deployment of federal forces and other unpleasantries if its voters elected the self-described democratic socialist as mayor. But why after calling Mamdani all kinds of names, even warning of his possible arrest, did Trump later smother the mayor-elect with flamboyant affection? An explanation: The MAGA show is closing — as is Trump’s time in the White House. Trump needs a new forum on which to stage his dramas. New York may seem a natural ...

Thanksgiving with father was one that really should be forgotten

I’ll start by making a few things clear: I love my father, I love cooking and I love Thanksgiving. And now that the throat-clearing is done, I can move on to the complaining. Because of all dishes in all the holidays on the calendar, there’s nothing like the Thanksgiving turkey for getting under your skin. And last year, it got under mine like the butter rub for a gourmet gobbler. My dad lives in Florida, where global warming has gone to retire, and he keeps the thermostat set to an Amazonian 85 degrees to boot. As an immigrant, he fears drafts more than his parents ...

Support small business

Those who have endured the madness of Black Friday and still have plenty of holiday shopping to do should consider using this Small Business Saturday to explore retailers (and gift ideas) that will help add a personal touch to your giving. Since 2010, the annual event has celebrated small, independent businesses in our communities. American Express estimates as much as $22 billion was spent on Small Business Saturday in 2024. For the 99.9% of businesses in the U.S. that qualify as “small,” according to Forbes, that kind of spending is essential. It helps employ more than 62 ...

The Epstein conspiracy has been in plain sight

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know — even if you may have committed terrible crimes. That’s the Jeffrey Epstein version of the famous line about success. The massive tranche of Epstein emails released by the House Oversight Committee didn’t reveal any smoking guns about Donald Trump, but they did highlight a vast conspiracy to help the disgraced financier thrive despite his guilty plea to sex charges involving a minor in 2008. This conspiracy wasn’t the work of the Deep State, or Israel, or the Jews. No, it was more pedestrian and damning than that. An ...

Enforcing immigration laws not the more equivalent of the Holocaust

Whence cometh the conviction, in America and even more in Britain and Europe, that open borders is the only moral immigration policy? Of course, not everyone believes that, and many who do stop short of saying so. But the contrast between the rhetoric and policies of the first two decades of the century and those that have prevailed since President Donald Trump’s election is unmistakable. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, like the George Bushes, professed to want to enforce immigration laws. Careful projections of the illegal population estimate that it peaked at ...
