Remembering Jack Cera

Dear Editor, I was very much saddened as a result of the recent passing of an outstanding professional and advocate on behalf of the people of our area, former Ohio State Representative Jack Cera of Bellaire. As a long-time elected, and very successful, state official, Jack, who was a life-long Democrat, who was always willing, whenever necessary, to work with Republican House members in order to get what he thought was best for his constituents, served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1983-1996, and again from 2011-2020, and in between his terms in office, served as ...

Ask questions, things aren’t always what you think

Lynnda and I were at the reception prior to the Speaker Hall of Fame Banquet dinner at this year’s Influence, the National Speakers Association’s annual conference in Phoenix, Arizona. We met Neerja from India. She is a generational diversity speaker helping companies to better understand employees from different generations so they can have a more effective workforce. Our conversation turned to marriage. Neerja had an arranged marriage. Since she was a child, both families agreed on the marriage. She accepted her role eventually falling in love with her husband. A plus for Appalachian Ohio

Folks in our part of the Buckeye State often feel left out or forgotten when it comes to state-level decisions and developments, but the Appalachian Community Grant Program is a real change-maker for the local region. On Friday, ground was broken for the Appalachian ECOTONE riverfront amphitheater and trails in Sardis. Monroe County received $4.4 million through the $500 million Appalachian Community Grant Program to create the new riverfront amphitheater and walking trail, located at 37800 OH-7. Gov. Mike DeWine launched the program aimed at creating transformational changes and ...

Gaza crisis

Dear Editor, It is good to see “The Time Leader” published the NOT “Fake News” about Gaza, Re: “Starvation In Gaza — who’s to blame?” Hamas is a terrorist organization. That is what they do. I have seen numerous reports on “Where’s The Beef (food).” Israeli “haters” know. Egypt knows. It is good for one’s mental, humanitarian health. If there is no Israel, God failed. He won’t. God bless and keep Israel and the USA. Sam Fregiato St. Clairsville

Protecting voter rolls

While some states are fighting back against U.S. Justice Department requests for access to their voter registration lists and other elections information, Ohio has begun the four-year process of ensuring voter rolls here are as clean as they can be. Among the states that have received requests from the federal government so far, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Wisconsin have simply said “no.” Officials there say they have questions about the legality of the requests and how the information will be used. After all, state elections officials are responsible for their own voter rolls, ...

Cheers & Jeers

CHEERS to new that Flushing Village Council is back to full strength after three members resigned in May. And CHEERS to those who were willing to step up and serve. JEERS to the negative and allegedly violent rhetoric that prompted two of those Flushing council members to resign. Public servants should feel safe in their positions and in their personal lives. CHEERS to the new rest areas that were officially unveiled in Belmont County on Interstate 70 this week. They have been serving the public for a few months, but the ceremony was a nice touch. JEERS to some reportedly selfish ...
