Here we go again, Ohioans

Ohio’s Redistricting Commission is, again, gearing up to redraw the state’s congressional map — ahead of the 2026 elections; and meant to stand for the next three elections. And so we are back where we started — recall that the redistricting commission essentially refused to do its job last time it was asked. First, of course, the Republican supermajority in the Ohio Legislature will get a chance to draw new maps. But the Republicans also hold five of the seven seats on the redistricting commission and six of the seven seats on the Ohio Supreme Court. Few are even pretending ...

Hold Intel accountable

It gets a little harder each time to match state officials’ public optimism that Intel will live up to all its promises to Ohioans, when the news is that — again — momentum is slowing. In fact, last week Intel said it will “further slow” the pace of construction on a microchip facility that was supposed to be up and running THIS year. The last time we got such news, The Columbus Dispatch reported Intel was delaying its opening to at least 2030 or 2031. It is not clear now how much further that date might be pushed. “While the pace of construction in Ohio may not be as ...

Facts tell, passion sells — people make emotional decisions

A few years ago, at an industry conference, my closing story was running my first half-marathon with our daughter, Dannielle. The audience needed to know they have the ability to do great things if they believe and do the work. I’ve told the story over a hundred times. This audience was hearing it for the first time. To keep it fresh, I relive the events, telling it with the same passion as if it happened yesterday. This week Lynnda and I are in Phoenix at Influence, the National Speakers Association’s Annual Conference. Professional speakers know; No. 1 It’s all about the ...

Just before President Trump pushed her out at the behest of his corporate donors, former Federal Trade Commission chairwoman Lina Khan released a damning report about the most rapacious and anti-competitive actors in the entire healthcare system: pharmacy benefit managers. These middlemen in the drug supply chain don’t discover new medicines. They don’t manufacture them. They don’t even physically dispense most prescriptions. Yet they rake in tens of billions of dollars each year by driving up costs for everyone else — especially patients battling cancer, HIV, heart disease, ...

A week of losses for the entertainment world

What a week! The past several days have been filled with nothing but bad news from a pop culture perspective. First, last Sunday came word that Malcolm-Jamal Warner, known to my generation as “Theo” for his 1980s role as Theodore Huxtable in “The Cosby Show,” had died. He was 54 years old and apparently died of drowning after he was sept away by the current of the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Costa Rica. That was sad news for me. I always kind of favored his character Theo, sympathizing with his plight as the only boy in a large family that included multiple sisters. As ...

Celebrating summer fun

Summer is here, and it is a season of celebration in Eastern Ohio and the Upper Ohio Valley area. Already this year, a number of festivities have taken place in communities all across the region. From chili cook-offs to the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend and, just this past week, the Upper Ohio Valley Italian Heritage Festival, numerous events have already occurred. Don’t worry that the summer fun is ending anytime soon, though. Starting Wednesday, the Martins Ferry Volunteer Fire Department, with support from Unified Bank, takes over the City Park in Martins Ferry. It will ...
