UL grad, Kemp, honored by MEC

WEST LIBERTY — Hannah Kemp arrived at West Liberty University after a successful prep running career at Union Local. However, the true freshman entered her initial cross country season with none of what she accomplished in high school in mind. “I had a clean slate,” Kemp said. “I told myself I had no expectations and I just needed to run.” And she’s not only ran. She’s ran really well, too. “The season has been a great experience so far as it’s definitely been a season of ‘new beginnings,’” Kemp relayed. “I really enjoy the distance running ...

1969 WVU grid squad OV driven

MORGANTOWN - It remains as one of the most impressive seasons in WVU football history. It was 1969 and the Mountaineers rolled to a 10-1 record. The lone blemish was to rival Penn State. The exclamation point on that brilliant campaign was a 14-3 Peach Bowl win over ACC champion South Carolina. The Mountaineers were coached by Jim Carlen while a young Bobby Bowden was the offensive coordinator. Such success could not have come to fruition if not for a Blue & Gold roster that boasted a heavy Ohio Valley flavor. Four starters were local products. Bellaire’s Mike Sherwood was the ...

Holzopfel succeeding in two sports at WU

WHEELING — Playing one sport at the collegiate level is a challenge. Playing two would seem nearly impossible. So far, it’s worked out quite well for Buckeye Local graduate Emily Holzopfel, who is a member of the golf and women’s basketball teams at Wheeling University. Holzopfel — one of the most highly decorated athletes to come from Buckeye Local, claimed her first award — after several in high school — at the collegiate level when she was named the Wheeling University Female Athlete of the Week. Holzopfel earned that distinction after her strong showing at the ...

A Rose like none other

BELLAIRE - He was the Green Pied Piper. No one could attract people to St. John Central like Mike Rose. The most successful football coach in school history was a lightning rod for migration to the Fighting Irish Nation. Rose served as St. John Central head football coach for just three seasons (1997-99). He bled Green, however, for all 56 years of his life...a life that ended sadly and all too soon. He was laid to rest Monday. Rose guided the Fighting Irish grid program to unparalleled heights. Despite not taking over until Aug. 1 in 1997, he led the Green gridders to an 8-2 ...
