PONY World Series in search of area teams to compete

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Little League World Series is a global happening. It plays out every August in Williamsport, Pa. Another international youth baseball event is staged each summer much closer to the Ohio Valley. The PONY World Series calls Washington, Pa. home, less than a 30-minute drive from Wheeling. The Oglebay Park Golf Club teed it up once again last Sunday, but the venue shifted to the Cadiz Country Club. The club’s fourth tournament of the season — the John Tarr III Memorial Tournament — attracted 83 players, utilizing a two-man, 50 percent best ball format. The winning duo was Tom Stillmak and Jade Waligura, who finished with a 65. Jay Davis and Brian Ghaphrey finished second with a 68, while Mike Wetzel and George Templin also had a 68. Shadyside native embarks on new sports endeavor

ROCHESTER, Mich. — After enjoying a successful four-decade career in professional sports, John Ciszewski is primed for a new challenge. The 1973 Shadyside High grad — better know to his friends as “Giz” — has been named associate athletic director for external operations at Oakland University, located in suburban Detroit. The Golden Grizzlies are members of the NCAA D-I Horizon League with an enrollment of 20,000. WHEELING — The Oglebay Park Golf Club held its annual Ye Olde Alpha Speidel event on the Jones Course last Sunday with a field of 96 players. Bryan Myers continued his strong play, firing an impressive round of 71. He was four shots clear of runner-up Mike Wilson, John Monto, Freddie Fitzsimmons, Dave Shaffer and Bob Clark. The Ohio High School Athletic Association made a decision recently that infuriated wrestling coaches. It’s decision to switch the state wrestling tournament from its annual Thursday through Saturday format to Friday through Sunday did not sit well with coaches, especially those involved in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference. I’ve been attending the state wrestling tournament in Columbus for the past several years. I’ve found the Schottenstein Center to be very accessible.
