Bridgeport residents decline to pass levies

BRIDGEPORT — Bridgeport village voters decined to pass three proposed levies Tuesday.

The village had a police levy and two renewal levies for operating expenses listed on the general election ballot, all three of which were voted down. Results for all three levies were within a few dozen votes.

The police levy was voted down 364-317 votes, according to unofficial results from the Belmont County Board of Elections.

The 5-mill continuing measure was a first-time proposed police levy and would have helped keep the department funded.

The department, which covers both Bridgeport and the village of Brookside, is the second busiest city or village police agency in Belmont County, Lt. Darby Copeland has said. The department has fielded more than 2,000 calls this year.

Police Chief John Bumba said although the department is disappointed with the results, members respect the voters’ decision.

“We are disappointed, however, we will continue to provide the very best service for the residents of the village with the resources we have available,” he said.

The levy was expected to generate around $105,000 annually for the department.

Mayor Norma Teasdale said she is also disappointed about the levies’ failure to pass.

“We are disappointed in the results, but we’ll continue to rebuild our pride of living in Bridgeport. We’ll work tirelessly to make the village a nice, safe place to live,” she said.

Both operating levies were renewal levies that had helped support the village’s general fund including the police department, village administration, utilities, maintenance and improvements, and fire and emergency costs. The first expense levy was declined 351-331 votes, while the second expense levy was declined 361-315 votes. Each levy was set at a rte of 1.5 mills for five years.

Nearly 20 percent of the general fund comes from the levies and helps support numerous aspects of the village operations. Each of the operating levies generated approximately $12,000 annually for the village.

The previously implemented operating levies will remain in effect until 2022.
