Man charged with assault on pregnant woman

WHEELING Police say a man’s attack on a pregnant woman caused severe damage to her fetus.

Around 2:30 p.m. on April 27, police responded to Catholic Charities in Wheeling regarding a physical disturbance. At the scene, police spoke with the alleged victim, who directed them to Justin Johnson, 31, of Moundsville.

The two had allegedly argued, the woman said, after an intimate encounter. Johnson allegedly grabbed her by the neck and threw her to the ground, picked her up again and threw her against rocks.

When speaking to police, Johnson told police that the woman was four months pregnant. Police say the woman was taken to a hospital for evaluation, where doctors were unable to detect a heartbeat on the fetus.

Johnson was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, a felony. He remains lodged at the Northern Regional Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond. His hearing before magistrate Joe Roxby is set for Friday.
