Buckeye Local students spread kindness

CONNORVILLE — Several students at Buckeye Local High School have been spreading cheer among their peers, offering words of encouragement and festive creations to make both life and the holidays brighter.

Freshmen Corissa Griffith, Haley Langsdorf and Allison Clifford painted windows and posted uplifting notes over the past few months in an effort to inspire joy. Griffith and Langsdorf called upon Clifford for assistance.

“Nov. 13 was World Kindness Day and I tried to do something big with that,” Griffith said. “I hope to do something like that every year, but this is probably the biggest one we’ve ever done.”

Post-It Notes covered about 600 lockers and doors with inspirational inscriptions such as, “Don’t let the world change your smile; Let your smile change the world.” Their acts prompted many positive responses and Griffith spearheaded similar spirit boosters during state testing, plus she hopes to continue the trend during finals this spring.

“I like making people happy. I like making them smile,” she commented.

She first coordinated the project in elementary school and decided to carry it on after she entered junior high. In November, she and Langsdorf wrote roughly 500 notes to post on students’ lockers and teachers’ doors and Clifford joined them to paint festive window scenes at Buckeye North Elementary on Dec. 12. The trio were recognized as students of the month for their generous acts and said they just wanted to spread some happiness.

“We did window painting because we are in the art club,” Langsdorf commented. She added that Griffith was known for her kind nature, while she and Langsford both enjoyed participating in the projects.

“If you are down, she is always there making sure you are smiling,” Langsdorf said. “I’ve loved spending more time with Corissa because she’s my best friend.”

“It’s allowed us to reach out to the student body and help us talk to them,” Clifford noted.

BLHS Principal Luke Parsons couldn’t be prouder of the students and their terrific acts of kindness.

“They embody the spirit and pride I am trying to instill within the students of Buckeye Local. They took an idea of kindness and created a day full of uplifting possibility,” he said. “The notes, the cards and the kindness brought a much-needed lift to the students and staff at Buckeye Local.”
