Cattle rancher to discuss work, life

SHOWN HERE is a longhorn steer in deep snow during a past winter at the Dickinson Cattle Co. in Barnesville.

MARTINS FERRY — At 6 p.m. Jan. 13, Martins Ferry Public Library will hold a special program given by Darol Dickinson, general manager of Barnesville-based Dickinson Cattle Co. LLC.

Dickinson will discussing a day in the life of a cattle rancher — a job he has done for the last 30 years. In addition to judging major cattle shows, Dickinson writes articles, speaks at cattlemen’s events, conducts livestock judging clinics, and talks the animal circuit.

Dickinson Cattle Co. is on the cutting edge of ranch genetics, breeding Texas Longhorn, Dutch BueLingo, and African Watusi. The ranch offers public narrated bus tours, and sells BTO (Better Than Organic) beef at its Longhorns Heads to Tail store.

Celebrities who have purchased the ranch’s beef include Andre the Giant, George Lucas and Col. Oliver North, according to information provided by the library.

This program is free and open to the public.
