East Richland Christian School teachers receive STEM education award

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — East Richland Christian Schools was recently named as a recipient of The Governor’s Thomas Edison Awards for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research for the 2020-21 school year. This distinguished honor was given to only 45 schools in the state of Ohio; East Richland Christian Schools is the only school in Belmont County to earn the award.

This prestigious Governor’s Thomas Edison Award is given by The Ohio Academy of Science and was first established in 1985.

It recognizes Ohio schools and teachers who stimulate scientific student research and technological design, and who extend experiential opportunities beyond the traditional classroom activities.

In addition to conducting a local science fair of more than 12 students, East Richland Christian Schools also had four students go on to the District 16 Science Fair and three students advance on to the State Science Fair.

Additional award criteria was met by East Richland Christian Schools through the implementation and use of various other STEM initiatives, including Outdoor Education, a multi-grade robotics program, 3-D printing capabilities, college-level academic opportunities, and integrated ‘STEM Time’ curriculum.

In addition to the school’s overall award, eight current East Richland Christian staff members also received individual recognition for their dedication and commitment to STEM education and scientific student research. The teachers earning this distinguished honor are Jessi Crumm, Kari Yockey, Brian Yourko, Jane Powell, Aaron Mostia, Kama Martin, and Jennifer Gooch. Staff member Juanita Roxby was also recognized with the award.

East Richland Christian Schools is a ministry of East Richland Evangelical Friends Church and is located at 67888 Friends Church Road in St. Clairsville.

The school exists to educate and discipline students in a strong academic environment, equipping them to function as committed followers of Christ in the world.
