Jefferson County genealogical society sets events
ADENA — The Jefferson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, the Mt. Pleasant Historical Society, and the Smithfield Historical Society will meet for joint events during 2023. The events will be open to the public with reservations for lunch.
On April 30 at 1 p.m., members of the Jefferson County Chapter OGS, the Mt. Pleasant Historical Society, and the public will meet for lunch at The Farm Restaurant, Ohio 150 near Mt. Pleasant (address is Adena). Following lunch, officers of both groups will present information about each organization and how the public can be involved. Sally Culler, owner of The Farm, will give a presentation on the farm and historical house, which dates back to 1857. A tour of the historic Quaker Meeting House in Mt. Pleasant will follow the lunch event and be presented by a member of the Mt. Pleasant Historical Society. The Meeting House is in Mt. Pleasant and a short drive from The Farm.
Reservations are now being accepted for the April 30 lunch and limited to the first 30 respondents with a $10 deposit. Deadline for reservations is April 15. Contact Connie Rohall, Jefferson County Chapter treasurer, at 740-632-2735 or by email at rohallconnie@yahoo.com.
On Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. members of the Jefferson County Chapter OGS, the Smithfield Historical Society, and the public will meet for lunch at Le Chateau Pier Restaurant, 195 Ohio 151, Smithfield.
Following lunch, officers of both groups will present information about each organization and how the public can be involved.
Todd and Tina Piergallini, owners of Le Chateau Pier, will give a presentation about the historical property. A tour of the Smithfield Historical Society Museum will follow the lunch event. The museum is a short drive from Le Chateau Pier.

The Genealogy Society’s third event of 2023 will be Nov. 5, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 437 Powell’s Lane in Wintersville. Following lunch, Jefferson County Chapter President Flora VerStraten Merrin will present The History of the United States Federal Census and how to use the census records for family history research.
The Jefferson County Chapter OGS office is located at 501 Fifth Street in Stratton and houses a wide array of records.
Office hours for research are the first and fifth Thursdays of the month 5:30-7:30 p.m. and on the second, third, and fourth Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments are available on Saturday by contacting Matt Detchon, preferably by text, at 330-843-0176.
