BELMONT — The Belmont Soil and Water Conservation District will host Camp WILD starting at 9 a.m. July 20-21 at Barkcamp State Park.

WILD stands for “wander, investigate, learn and discover.”

Samantha Hearn, agriculture and education specialist at Belmont SWCD, said that the district has been hosting Camp WILD for several years.

“We host Camp WILD every year to educate children about the outdoors. A lot of kids don’t get to go canoeing and hiking. I believe Camp WILD means a lot to the community because it gives every kid an opportunity to spend time in nature,” Hearn said.

Camp WILD is open to all children who are ages 8-13 by July 20.

On July 20, campers will go hiking, fishing and canoeing. They will also practice survival skills including fire starting and boat making. The day will end with a camp by a fire.

On July 21, campers will take a trip to Deerassic Education Center, located in Cambridge. There they will explore in a stream, take aim at a BB gun and archery range, get up close to a white-tailed deer herd and navigate a low ropes obstacle course before returning to Barkcamp State Park.

All meals will be provided during the trip. Parents should make sure to include a list of dietary restrictions and allergies when filling out the registration form.

Campers are encouraged to bring their own tent, sleeping bag, pillow, extra clothes, sunblock, bug spray, towels, swimsuit and extra snacks.

Belmont SWCD reminds parents to make sure that their children wear clothes that can get dirty and appropriate footwear.

The camp will have shower houses that the campers can utilize.

Three or more chaperones will be with the children at all times during the entire camping trip.

Registered campers can be dropped off at 9 a.m. July 20 at the Barkcamp Group Camp area and picked up at 3 p.m. July 21 at the same location.
