Exhibit features national, local artists

WHEELING — The new Visions & Shadows Art Exhibition at the Stifel Fines Arts Center takes viewers on an exploration of the unknown as national and regional artists display works that push the boundaries of traditional and non-traditional artistic mediums, as well as our imaginations.

Nationally recognized artists in the exhibit include puppeteer Darren Way, sculptor Lavana Lemley, photographer Jenna Manson, taxidermist Sara Ford Cocco, mixed-media artists Michael McKowen & Jason Sauer and more. Visions & Shadows also showcases the work of local artists in a juried competition.

The exhibit is underway and runs through Nov. 4. The Stifel Fine Arts Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Free admission.

Open Category

First place — Lynn Anderson, “The Arrival,” mixed media;

Second place — Gerald Vanscyoc, “The Saint,” oil on board; and

Third place — Angela Shaffer, “Area of Rescue,” photography;

John Williams Category

First place — Robert Vilamagna, “Blue Waters,” repurposed lithographed metal, nails on panel;

Second place — Bobbi Priebe “My ADHD unleashed by ‘Duel of the Fates'”; and

Third place — Bill Butler, “A Howler for Hermione,” oil and cold wax.

Jurors for Visions & Shadows contest were Dylan Collins, assistant professor, School of Art and Design, West Virginia University, and Daniel Boyd, acclaimed filmmaker, retired professor at West Virginia State University.

Meanwhile, the Shadows Ball Costume Party is slated to be held from 7-11 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Stifel Fine Arts Center. This costumed celebration will be held among the art of the Visions & Shadows exhibition. People are asked to wear their most creative costumes in a judged competition with prizes. There will also be sideshow performances, live music, film screenings, raffles, food and drinks. Tickets are $35 per person. VIP tickets, which include entry into a VIP Lounge with special food and drinks, are available for $75. Costumes are required for entry. Call 304-242-7700 for more information.
